Provider beans & Horticultural beans ??
we decided to try a few new beans this year
we picked up some organic Provider beans
(bush)
we know nothing about them.....well we know a little....we know they are a early bean that does well germ in cooler temps......i did do a search and found a little bit of info on them
.....others on the forum have planted them before....but....how do you eat them? are they are green bean type or a shelling dry bean type?
the other new one is Horticultural bean (semi bush) ?? semi bush
...what does that mean?......and can you shell them and cook them to eat at harvesting time?....how well do they dry and save?.....we have never grown a bean for drying but sure do want to learn how to
thanks
rose......who feels like she may have gotten a little sun on her face today!

Provider bush beans are a green bean and they "can" well.
The term "semi bush" means that they probably will not support themselves without falling over and will need a trellis. Something that is 4-5 feet tall should work well.
You can cook and eat horticultural beans after picking them but I have always dried and stored them in jars for use in soups during winter.

Re: Provider beans & Horticultural beans ??
thank you happyC!!
good to know that provider beans *can* well....if....we get enough we would love to can some.....we have only water bath last year....but...we are going to get a pressure canner this year and become brave and do some veggie canning....
we are trying to germ 36 provider beans
last year we direct seeded green beans.....and the birds ate a lot of them right when they came up.....we prefer to direct sow...but....hubby hasnt finished some of the area's for planting and put up some kind of cover for them to keep the birds away....so...im not patient...it was warm out side today....and i stuck some seeds into some MM put a plastic cover on top....and there they sit....
hoping to see some sprouts come up
im hoping this will put some hurry into hubby to get some things done already.....
hugs

Re: Provider beans & Horticultural beans ??
Mmmmmm, I love me some Provider Beans! My personal favorite (at least until the Fillet beans come in).
BTW ANY purple seeded bean can be planted earlier than white, or any other combo of colors for that matter. I am planning on pushing a few into the ground today (May 7).
I've got some horticulture beans too, just don't remember what kind. YUM.
