Welcome from a former Ukiah, CA not-so-smart-gardener. Now I am a windy South Dakota even-dumber gardener geek

! Took me a few seasons to figure out that I can't start my warm-weather seedlings in January..... :scratch:. You will love it here - so many experienced gardeners - I have learned so much in just the month I have been on here. Now, if only my snow would finish melting so I can start building my boxes.

Where did you garden before?

Thanks for the welcome TC! I am definitely gardening on new ground, still trying to figure out what I can grow here successfully with our year round moderate temps. I'm sure winter crops will thrive. Gonna try to figure out how to create a micro climate for successful summer growing.

We're renting a place with a modest back yard, with only a small area that gets enough sun. The landlord is thrilled about a gardener moving in, and all for using that spot for veggie gardening. Thanks to SFG, I'll be able to maximize our spot of sun.

I wonder what the landlord would think of a sunny front yard veggie garden... Very Happy

It never hurts to ask. When you move a sqft garden can easily be put back to grass or planted in flowers. Some veggies are very ornamental as wll as edible. Swiss chard with the variable colored stems comes to mind. An a mix of red and green lettuce makes a pretty bed. The flowers on okra remind me of a hibiscus.

We are only about 225 miles north of you on the Oregon Coast. I love Crescent City and try to get there a couple of times a year.

Marvelous news that the landlord is enthusiastic about your gardening. In the front yard, you have lots of choices. There are many veggies that are fairly attractive and not overwhelming and if intermingled with ornamental plants would make a nice front yard garden. In fact some of the companion plants like cosmos and marigolds would make it look like a flower garden.

Who knows, you may have yard-round gardening.

Thanks for the welcome. furs, you must be in the vicinity of Newport/Lincoln City. We've enjoyed that part of the coast a few times. Gardening at the coast is a new experience for me. Gonna be a real learning experience finding what works in this climate that can also take the winds. Any suggestions are most welcome!
