Greetings from the First Coast

After a year or so of gawking at other people's gardens, I decided to give it a try. DH agreed to let me try growing veggies in the flowerbed alongside the house. I could not fit a 4x4 so I went with a 3x2 using edging pavers...not the most attractive BUT, if I am successful maybe I can get DH to build me a pretty vinyl 4x4 box next year.

The side of my house faces south, so I placed the grave (that's what it looks like right now) with the trellis against the wall facing north. The back row has burpless cucumbers with a trellis to grow on, then I have tomatoes (1 big boy and 1 better boy both caged), a bell red pepper (staked), a California Wonder green pepper also staked and I have a hanging basket with Red Cherry tomatoes (2).

At this point I think I may have too many cuc/plants for the area (4) but I feel like that would be homicide to throw them away... anyway here is a pic of what it looks like today (hopefully the plants will grow fast and detract from the tomb look.)

Hi I live in St.Johns county too. So hi neighbor. You will have such fun showing your DH just how much you can grow in a small space and when he sets his teeth on those, oh so good home grown vegies he will run to the hardware store to get the supplies he needs to build you another box. I would encourage you to space plants according to Mels instructions I know it is hard to thin out happy little seedlings but the plants will be so much healthier and much less likely to get things like powdery mildew. By the way I think the pavers look very nice even better than wood.

Is your avatar a picture of your "tomb"? If so, it looks pretty darn good. Can't wait to see it lush with veggies.

According to ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book, four cucumber plants is not too much to trellis on the 2 foot North side of your garden. However, you might have some Florida residents that disagree. Things seem to grow super well down there.

Furbalsmom: I hope the neighbors don't freak out when the cucs start growing...I think maybe the trellis is too small...we'll see.
