Re: Vertical Garden beyond a Trellis
I think I'm seeing strawberries in a pallet planter.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

I saw free pallets on craigslist just the other day! I'll have to see if they're still available...

You'd need a seep hose to keep it watered ???FarmerValerie wrote:I've had a pallet fence, this would be a neat living fence.
Perhaps have some sort of non porous liner with planting holes stuffed inside the pallet or else the wood will soak up & evaporate off most of the moisture .. that's why we have to line our hanging backed with a non permeable membrane of sorts.

Good ideas! I wonder about spinach? I could keep it in the shade so as to extend the growing season. Maybe green onions too. Hmmm. Who knows what would grow?!

Re: Vertical Garden beyond a Trellis
I'm glad this post came back up. First, I've been looking at that pallet garden and thinking I might do a strawberry patch in it. Not sure how well it would work. I am still in an in between hoping to stop subbing and get my own classroom, may have to move to an apartment place in my life. I was thinking that might be a great way to get a lot of use out of a small patio, if it get's enough sun.
Mean while, at my moms house, she has a large area in the back yard against the house that has no windows (south facing, lots of evening sun). It goes all the way up to the attic. (one story house) I don't know if it's possible or not in reality but I was day dreaming the other day and came up with this idea. I want to build a small square foot box, probably 1x3. Add metal loop screw things (I know technical words) and a rope, using a pulley system attached to the over hang of the roof to create a hanging square foot box that can be lowered to water and harvest, using the pulley. I thought it might be great for hanging tomatoes and other small veggies like cucumbers, tiny cantaloupe. I don't think I'd ever try this, for fear of ruining the house, but it's sound genius (if I do say so my self, lol).

Re: Vertical Garden beyond a Trellis
Oooohh! I'm going to for sure try the pallet garden this spring. I'll post some pics when it comes time. If I could find some old gutters I have the perfect place for some of those...hmmmm. Such wonderful ideas!

I love all of these ideas! I hope I find the resources to give something new a try. My husband is picking up my free gutters tonight.

This is cool (and it's on Facebook for those not on FB I don't know if you will be able to see the album). There are a lot of photos on the Container Gardening Alliance FB Page

Camp, that looks like it could be a fun project.
Any thoughts about pros and cons of actually growing the berries? Will they over-winter OK? I have little experience growing strawberries.

For my hardiness zone, this is not suitable for overwintering berry plants.boffer wrote:Camp, that looks like it could be a fun project.

I was thinking they'd be difficult to mulch for winter weather protection!
Re: Vertical Garden beyond a Trellis
The photos are from the Philippines. I suppose one could put the containers in a bed of hay and cover with more hay. Or build heated green house over it.
Re: Vertical Garden beyond a Trellis
Opps, maybe you were referring to the upright pcv for strawberries??
