Vertical growing....

Question... I have a teeny tiny yard, and really only room for 4 beds that I can put a vertical frame one. I am having a hard time narrowing it down what I am going to grow vertically.

I am wondering what the reason is for limiting melons and squash to one per 2 sqaures? The size of the leaves? I haven't done this before, and I know that most vining things do seem to take over a traditional garden bed.

What have you grown vertically that has done well one plant per one square?

snap peas, pole beans, cukes and summer squash. I have cukes and squash growing up the same trellis - well they will once they are big enough, and then peas on one of their own, and pole beans on one of their own. The pole beans will create a more shady spot, and I have some lettuce, arugala and swiss chard growing in that spot - it will still get some sun just not full sun as it would if the beans weren't there. I have also found that my raddish, and spinach like the shade more so I don't miss out on the use of that area under the trellis.

Just my thoughts...

For last year's trellis crops I grew 2 cucumbers per square, 1 indeterminate tomoto vine per square (Juliet and Sweet Million Cherry tomatoes are vines), and 8 sugar snap peas per square. I also planted 1 butternut squash per square but it didn't grow well so I never found out if this was enough room or not, it was supposed to be 1 per 2 sqaures but I didn't realize this when I planted it; it didn't grow well because I may have disturbed the roots too much when I transplanted it, it got hit by some late frost, and the season was cool/overcast all summer. I also tried 1 Minnesota midget cantaloupe per square but planted too late from seed for it to amount to much so I am not sure if 1 square was enough room or not for this dwarf variety. I will be trying it again this year.

I will also be trying sweet dumpling squash, acorn squash, buttercup squash, and spaghetti squash this year -- they are all vining winter squashes. I am trying them each in one end square next to sugar snap peas in case they need the extra room later in the season when the snap peas are done.
