I've definitely found that putting on top of the fridge helps. We keep our house at 78 (other than the few weeks of the year when it's the heater running instead of the A/C) and it still make a big difference to put them on top the fridge. I just check them every day and as soon as they pop up I put them in individual containers (disposible cups, yogurt containers, stuff like that) and put them in the windowsill. Have a jungle of tomato and pepper plants I'm working on getting into the ground this week!

You totally SHOULD at least give the seeds a try. Seedlings from the store are the plan B. At least you know you can fall back if for some strange reason your seeds fail. Starting from seeds is rewarding and it keeps you interested. You go check on them every morning, and see how they develop and you heart is singing when you see them come out. It also gives you a chance to try some interesting varieties, otherwise not available in the nursery as seedlings.
Emotions aside, I think it will add tremendously to your experience and help you understand your plants' life cycle. You will also be in full control how and what you grow.

Starting from Seeds. - Page 2 Empty replanted today

Post  model a man 2/22/2011, 1:32 am

well after 20 days and none of the seeds that I planted in the Jiffy green house trays sprouted so today I replanted seeds and this time I will keep the trays in the house the whole time (last time I left them outside for the first week). Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry Model A Man. I know it is disappointing to have a whole tray not germinate, but I also think you have the right idea, keep them inside until they have all germinated. It sounds like you took your Jiffy Greenhouse outside a bit too early and the temperature was just too cool for germination.

Once they have put out their true leaves is probably soon enough to start hardening them off by taking them outside for a bit each day if the temp is at least 45 - 50.

Lettuce, boccoli, cauliflower and your other cool weather plants should do ok outside once they have been hardened off.

Tomatoes and peppers usually don't do well if the nighttime temperature drops to less than 45 - 50 . (at least that is the case in my cool wet climate)
