HELP - High altitude and intense sunlight - Ecuador Empty HELP - High altitude and intense sunlight - Ecuador

Post  sfg4uKim 10/19/2010, 9:58 pm

I posted in another area, but it was suggested I contact y'all.

I HOPE to be going on a mission trip to teach Square Meter Gardening in Ecuador.

Can anyone give me hints on growing in high altitude in intense sunlight?

Thanks,
Kim Roman

The area I'd be going to is almost 8500 ft above sea level.

HELP - High altitude and intense sunlight - Ecuador Empty Re: HELP - High altitude and intense sunlight - Ecuador

I don't know if this'll help, but my dad was raised on the equator in Uganda at around 4600 feet. I know that they grew all of the common vegetables we do. eg. tomatoes, corn, peppers etc. He also went to school at around 8000 feet in Kenya and they (I believe) grew pretty much the same things. The only thing I remember him saying about the altitude is that they'd get a couple frosts per year.

Now that I see the date of the post I wonder if this post is irrelevant? Anyway, I hope the Mission Trip works out well.

Thanks for the info.

Actually I got turned down for the trip. The (American) director didn't think SFG would be of interest to city dwellers. HUH? REALLY?

Maybe I'll get to use the info with some other ministry.

Kim

HELP - High altitude and intense sunlight - Ecuador Empty Gardens at high altitude

Post  Gary NM 5/3/2012, 1:27 pm

I know this is a year late, but for future reference;)

The altitude is not the issue except as it relates to temperature. I leave at 5500 feet. Okra does not do well because it is not hot and humid enough, long enough, to prosper. Tomatoes do great! Warm/hot days and cool nights do something for tomatoes.

The season will be shorter and start much later than in Maryland. The SFG system is great for allowing early starts and being able to protect crops with coverings over the 4x4 square.

I know they raise lots of varieties of potatoes there. Maybe introduce city dwellers to the SFG tower for growing potatoes? Sweet potatoes orginially came from Central/South America, have high nutrition, and you might look at how to grow them as well.

Hope you get to make the trip soon.
