Anybody know anything about kolorabi or brocolli rabe
As an experiment, we decided to do a couple square of kolorabi and broccoli rabe for a winter crop.
We started a bit late, as we had an open box due to some sick tomatoes, and hadn't really planned for them.
But, i planted them (in mel's mix) just barely below the soil and have been keeping them moist for about 12 days now, and there's maybe 2 sprouts that aren't weeds. Although I'm being awful careful about weeding since I don't know what these guys look like yet.
Some fast growing carrots, and beets planted at the same time have been sprouted for days.
Anyway, if anyone has any advice, or knows how long these seeds take to germinate (The seed packets are in italian and make no sense to me)

Re: Anybody know anything about kolorabi or brocolli rabe
I planted both this spring. Got a great crop of raab, not so good on the kohlrabi but they grew well (just didn't form bulbs like I wanted.) They seemed to sprout fairly quickly in the spring. I have never tried them for a fall crop.... give them a few more days? I have never tried fall planting before but am guessing germination may take a little longer. Good luck!!!

How many per square did you do? I went 9 - but it was pretty well a guess. I can always thin them if they need more space.
And I won't give up on them, it's too late to plant anything else in those squares anyway, except maybe radishes, and I've already got 4 squares of those - well 3 1/2, the wife and I had a great all from the garden salad.

I think I went 9 too, but I'd have to look at my records. What I found out, though, is they both get pretty big when full size. The raab at maturity will need more like 4 (and crowded at that), but you can eat the thinnings! Also, the raab will let you cut and come again. I didn't get as many broccoli-looking thumb-size heads as I expected, but the leaves were bigger and tastier than I expected, too, compared to the stuff I've seen in stores.
Here is a picture of my raab from this spring. My hand is in back of just one plant so you can see it gets big.

Thanks so much for the picture and advice. Now if I actually get more than two sprouts, I'll know to thin them down a little.

Welcome! Like I said, you can let them grow a bit, the thinnings will be yummy.
