Is there a drainage hole in the bottom? Could it be too much water? Does it get nutrients? Have you moved it recently? Could it be pot-bound? Has your weather changed drastically?
Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
Yes to everything except it being pot bound. I've only had the tree for about 3 weeks. We've had excessive heat for the last 3 days. I know citrus trees love full sun but maybe the Phoenix sun and heat is too much.countrynaturals wrote:Is there a drainage hole in the bottom? Could it be too much water? Does it get nutrients? I have an orange tree but wouldn't mind a lemon in a pot. CN, Did you make the little cozies?
Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
Yup. My winter garden is a display garden, so no black nursery pots are allowed without proper attire.sanderson wrote:I have an orange tree but wouldn't mind a lemon in a pot. CN, Did you make the little cozies?
We LOVE our meyer lemon tree. It blooms twice a year and the blossoms smell sweeter than any other fruit-bearing plant I've ever had.
Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
I came across this older post where I was trying to think of a way to have little fruit trees. Fast forward to 2021 and I finally made the leap. I used 20-gallon pots for the 2 pears and 1 nectarine. Larger "half barrels" for the Pink Lemonade blueberries filled with a modified Mel's Mix that is heavy on peat moss for lowering the pH. Smaller "half barrels" for the lemon and lime tree. All are local varieties.sanderson wrote:From Facebook: https://www.growveg.com/guides/cordon-fruit-trees-how-to-get-the-best-harvest-from-a-small-garden/
If I use containers and grow upward to 6', does anyone know what size container the dwarf trees would need? I can't put them in the ground. I'm thinking for my area, peaches, cherries and maybe a nectarine.
Does anyone else have potted fruit trees in their garden, or dwarf varieties in-ground?
Does anyone have potted trees that are brought in during the winter?

I have a dwarf pear tree and a dwarf apple tree in-ground that I planted 38 years ago. Each is about 20' tall now. There were a few years when I could not aggressively prune them after I broke my back, and I found out dwarf fruit trees are only dwarf if they are kept pruned that way. This year we got 7 bushels of pears, and 6 bushels of apples off of those trees.
Last year I planted two new dwarf apple trees, and two new dwarf pear trees. But, unfortunately, the deer ate them off right down to ground level. So, for now I have one very large pear tree, and one very large apple tree.

Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
When I was growing up, my mom had a little orange tree that we rolled in and out. It bore tiny oranges. They were sweet. It was probably 5-6’ tall.
Up til this year, I had a pear tree, but in the rain and windy storms, it fell over, so it’s gone. My dad had a mini- orchard, but it’s too wet out there now.

Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
Sanderson,
I have six dwarf/semi-dwarf fruit trees in-ground. I should add, in improvised raised beds using pavers and/or concrete blocks.
A couple of years ago, I had a good crop on some of them, but since then, weather has intervened, right at blossom time. Wind, heavy hail, and frost, for example. They were not planted in Mel's Mix, but a combination of existing soil and Kellogg's Patio Plus. I may do soil testing in early spring, and plan to take precautions against coddling moth for the apple trees.
I'll also add either some homemade compost or organic fertilizer to help things along. It's a bother, but I probably will have to get some frost cloth/netting to protect from weather and insects. The taller trees, I'm afraid, will have to suffer. Cherry and apple trees may benefit, however.

Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
I have a dwarved guava tree. It was dwarved when a 40 foot acacia fell on top of it, smashed it to splinters, and kept it hidden from the sun for two months before I could rescue it. That was 2017. It has been slowly recovering.
This year I found that the fruits were being chewed on just before ripening. After some forensic research, I determined that the culprits were birds. So I started wrapping the larger fruit with plastic sandwich bags. An interesting side effect is that the fruit that is wrapped seems to be getting bigger than the fruit previously had. It's like each fruit has its own greenhouse.

Re: Does anyone have any fruit trees?
I have a small house block and live in suburbia (city) but have lots and lots of fruit trees.
I graft and plant my own
If its a full dwarf then you can grow them in pots no problems, i would not use anything smaller than a 20litre pot - a full dwarf will typically be under 3ft fully grown.
If its a semi dwarf, pots are no good, a semi dwarf wih peak out at around 9ft, they do need to be pruned.
At my place I have,
Full dwarf Kafir Lime
Full dwarf lime
Semi dwarf lemon
Semi dwarf apple (2 off)
Semi dwarf peach
Semin dwarf plum
Semi dwarf nectarine
Semi dwarf orange
Semi dwarf avocado
Semi dwarf pear
Semi dwarf mandarin
Semi dwarf cumquat
Full size olive bush 21ft tall by 12ft wide
Full size mulberry bush 18ft by 12ft
Full size blueberry
3 full size grape vines
To name but a few
