Fruit trees

We just moved in October and I have to move my whole garden. Not really worried about the boxes, but I have a lot of apple and pear trees to move. Any suggestions? Half are 2 yrs old and the rest are 1 yr old. I also have a 2 yr old grapevine to move.

Not much advice (buy lots of burlap and twine) but I do want to encourage you that I keep most of my trees in pots.... every three years I pull the trees out of their pots and give them a root trim, and fresh dirt. The spring right back from that scary uprooting. Your trees should be fine. Don't let them get dry or sit too long bare-root. If they have to be out of the ground for vary long, you can pot them in wet sawdust, dirt or potting soil. An overcast day is best if you get to choose.

Make sure to dig a large enough root ball so as not to disturb the root system too much. Make sure the hole you are setting them in is good bit larger than the root ball. This is the most important thing.

Baby them with plenty of water and the appropriate nutrients. Have you tested the soil where they will be planted? It might be a good idea if you haven't. You may not have time though since the buds on apple and pear trees are swelling now and you need to get them move before they go into full flower.

You'll probably need to stake them well. This is especially true of dwarf trees.

Apples move well. I'm not so sure about pears, but I'd imagine they'll be fine as well.

Note: You won't get fruit this year.
