Sealing sfg box wood-recommendations? Empty Sealing sfg box wood-recommendations?

Hi,

Several members have mentioned what they use to seal the wood of their SFG boxes, but I haven't kept track. The question of what to use, their pros and cons, has been asked in another thread. I hope it will get more responses here. Suggestions?

Sealing sfg box wood-recommendations? Empty One Time Wood

Post  SirTravers 3/15/2010, 7:47 pm

Anyone who's One Time Wood knows it's good for 7 years and cures using sunlight. One time is a penetrating sealer so you can't just paint over something like Thompsons and expect it to work.
I recently looked at the MSDS and also emailed the makers about using One Time for planting boxes with food products. The say most assuredly that One Time is completely inert once it's cured. i know I sound like a commercial, but this stuff works good on other projects and I'm excited that it's safe for a SFG bed.

Good info, Travis, thanks,

Thompsons is crap, and it just kills me cause that's my last name!

Sealing sfg box wood-recommendations? Empty Re:Sealing sfg box wood-recommendations?

Post  rds1955 3/15/2010, 9:37 pm

I bought 2x12x12's last year and have had 3 large boxes (Unused) built laying in the back yard for a year... I still have about 12 boards left over from last year sitting in the Garage.. I didn't treat or paint them or anything...The ones in the back yard are just sitting there, all weathered, and soaked now with all the rain and snow we've had here on the East Coast...I'm going to use some red colored cinder blocks as legs, and I was thinking of just painting them a Brownish-red or dark maroon color before I put the soil in them (On the outer sides of course)...

I guess it all depends on the desire one has of appearances and functionality...For me, I just want the things to grow me some veggies...It sits in the far back end of the yard with the swimming pool in between the garden and the house..., so for me functionality is the primary object of my insanity..

I have Ghetto Deer and wildlife in my neighborhood... When the High Society deer stroll through, they just snub their noses in the air and pass on by....

HIya,

Since that color works for you, are you familiar with 'barn paint'? It's the color of......barns! with a built in primer for one coat painting. I buy it from a local hardware chain so I can't help with where to find it. Oh yeah, it comes in white too.

I can't speak from experience on this, but I did find something here:

http://www.sustainablevillage.com/servlet/display/product/detail/37016

It even says that it can be used on raised bed wood. Looks interesting.

Let's try it again:

http://www.thesustainablevillage.com/servlet/display/product/detail/41860

it is a sealer that they say is okay to use in raised bed gardens.
