Question about Trellis placement

I am in the process of designing my first garden and I have a question about placement of the trellis. I am planning on putting a 2' x 10' box along my north fence (on the south facing side) and would like to plant some tomatos, peas, zuchinis, and possible some other vine type vegetables there. My question/concern is about whether or not I need access to each side of the trellis, or if access to one side is enough? It would work out best if I can put the trellis right next to the fence without the need to walk between the fence and the trellis/garden box. Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I put my trellis against the house (north, facing south). It, too, was 2x10. I had tomatoes in the back and smaller items, in the front like two basil plants, some beets around the mater plants, as well as some onions, radishes, and carrots.

I have a 2ft x 10ft bed, its not against a wall but this is what I did for my peas. The trellis will be the netting mentioned in the SFG book, tied to a 2"x2" piece of wood that is attached to the top of the raised bed box...My peas will be planted on either side. Make sense? lol Realistically, you could move the trellis from the middle of the bed to one side.



lol and yes the top overhangs *just* so I can hang my tools on it LOL. It'll have hooks on the underside of the "overhang" so I can put hoes, spades, etc. 'away'.

What are those long handled thingies around your SFG bed?! My SFG tools have handles that are only 6 inches long-what gives?

lmfao, my gigantic hoe I was using it to mix soil in my little kiddy pool. My rake for raking it out in the bed, and around there somewhere is one of those twisty soil loosener things and a shovel. I lost all my little tools in the move, so I'm shopping for some nice ones this summer.

Why do you need hoes and spades SFG tools are a pencil, scissors and a trowel. But I do like your trellis

Live life to the fullest...live it on the edge...garden like there's no tomorrow: don't rotate this year!

We rotate for nutrition depletion and disease control. Adding compost takes care of the first. If you had no disease problems last year, do it, plant them in the same box.

I'm not an expert, but that's how I garden-put it off till next year!

yup, that is what I posted in another thread. so I told my hubby I wouldn't rotate the maters, maybe just other items like my brassicas and beans.

My mom never rotated, just amended her garded each fall and spring with some compost.

i only had BER in one tomato plant out of five in that box, fluke? Or should I do something?

from what I've read, it's not uncommon for the first couple fruits on a plant to get it, regardless of what you do

I'm new to SFG and love reading about ideas and experiences on this forum. I do not have much space for vertical crops where they won't shade out ground plantings, so I figured I could maximize by growing on both sides of a trellis. If I timed their growth properly, the plants in the back should get taller first and therefore get enough sun to produce before the front plants catch up. Sounds logical, right? I have a 2x6 box that I'd like to grow roma and cherry tomato plants in and a 4x4 box that I'd like to grow corn, for the kids, and cucumbers in.
I plan to put one trellis along the center of the 2x6, running SW to NE, for the tomatoes. I know how big and bushy cherry tomato plants get, so I would plant them on the back side, thinking that they won't really get shaded out by the roma tomato plants, even though they will be getting less sun throughout the day.
In the same 'logical' thought process, I'd put a trellis across the center of the 4x4, running SE to NW. I plan to put cukes in the front, facing SW, and plant corn along the back in 2 week intervals for 6 weeks. I am hoping that the corn will get tall enough quick enough to not be shaded out by the cukes. A lot of people say that corn is not really worth growing, but my kids really, really want to do it. Last year we grew 8 stalks (in a non-SFG) that were only good enough to use as fall harvest decorations!
Will either of these "logical" notions work? Has anyone ever tried anything similar to growing on both sides of a trellis before and had success? LupinFarm, does your pea box get good sun on both sides? Or does one side grow better than the other b/c of placement?
