Cucumber Trellis Placement Empty Cucumber Trellis Placement

Post  sbauer 5/19/2013, 5:24 pm

Hi all,

My plan right now is to grow cucumbers in eight squares (two 'rows' of four). I'd like to grow my cucumbers vertically so I'm building a trellis. Since I'm growing two rows, should I construct two of them or build one and place it in between the rows?

This will be my first year growing them vertically so I'm a bit unsure.

Thanks,
Shane

If you build it nice and sturdy, one right down the middle should be fine. However, to make it easier to see to harvest, you may need to trim and prune vines and leaves to keep the cuke forest down to a manageable density!

PS - the 'k' on the end of GGk is from my new kitten stomping on my keyboard as I hit 'send'!

For the varieties of cukes that I've planted, I would be comfortable using one trellis inbetween the two rows.

I am very interested in this topic because I have decided to grow my cucumbers on our chain link fence this year. I too wanted to free up space for a larger harvest this year. I am not sure how this will work but it makes for a good test I suppose. pale

Long before I ever heard of SFG, I grew my cukes and tomatos on the fences around my garden area. 4 sides rotated every 4 years. Worked great. Beans were on strings between poles down the middle of the garden.

I have 4 squares of cukes going so far, I am planning to build a square wire trellis for each square 3ft hi.
I am able to secure them by attaching to cross pieces that will be secured.
Then I should be able to use covers, hopefully keeping them from the dreaded
cucumber beetle... Twisted Evil
I'll provide photo's when ready

Last year my cukes almost topped their 8 foot trellis before the pickle worms decimated the whole crop. I am trying another 8 squares on the north side of my bed 2 this year.
