Black thumb turning green Empty Black thumb turning green

Hoping my black thumb will turn green. Found Mel's book (All New w/green cover) in library, read it then bought a copy to keep. My clever husband started by making 3 2x2' boxes for the back porch one month ago. We found med verm, p moss and compost w/ 4-5 sources and made the mix. We are having success for the first time ever! Today he added handles to two sides of our boxes which is very handy on our back porch. He also made vertical poles for the boxes with high hopes for tomatoes and beans this summer. Finally we put up nylon netting for the peas. Oh... and took pictures which I hope to show here.
We live in a cold spot in So Cal (frosts thru May most years) but we have thick plastic over all 3 boxes at night. The 3 boxes contain two varieties of lettuce, strawberries, peas, sweet onions and carrots. So far so good. C

Black thumb turning green Empty Becoming a Green Thumb:

Post  WardinWake Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:44 pm

Welcome to the SFG Forum. Glad you are here. The key to turning a black thumb into a green square foot garden one is education (the book and this forum) and going out and getting our hands in the soil. SFG makes it so easy that we want to be in the garden every day.

God Bless, Ward.

A good book. good compost, and a little experience will help turn that black thumb green.
A year ago I couldn't grow a tomato plant to good size.
Enjoy.

Quilt Bea

Thanks for your nice comments. We are having gardening success. Yipee!
So might you be a fellow quilt a holic too? It is what I love to do most in my spare time. I figure that I have to leave the SFG boxes alone after dark and take up quilting then. Not bad, huh?

Black thumb turning green Empty Oh golly, another quiltaholic...

Post  quiltbea Mon Mar 22, 2010 7:04 pm

I quilted many years before I took up veggie gardening last year. I had a perennial flower garden for about 5 years but veggies is new to me last year.
I am on the HGTV.com quilting and needlework board all the time. You might check it out. Its a great place for answers to questions and to see the latest works of quilters and needleworkers.
I have a blog about my quilting as well. You can see them listed below.

When spring comes, tho, I revert to being a gardener first and foremost. I save most of my quilting for the many non-gardening months we have in Maine.

Just plunge right and and enjoy. You'll probably make mistakes but with a small SFG they aren't as bad as having a huge flat garden.
I learn from every mistake I make for a better next season.
Hope to see more of you here.
