My Sugar Babies
We love watermelons. Ours just started blooming, and we have a few babies already. I haven't yet seen any male flowers, so those babies may still die off, but we are totally excited nonetheless.

Re: My Sugar Babies
Very exciting! They look good. I have two plants(my first time growing them) but they're out in my perennial bed instead of in my boxes. They've just started getting flowers so nothing to get excited about, yet!
Post updated pics when they start to grow. I'd love to see them!

Re: My Sugar Babies
So that's what full size watermelon leaves look like! I am growing Golden Midget, and turns out the fruit size isn't the only thing that's little.
Re: My Sugar Babies
This is my 2nd year at SFG and this year I'm trying Sugar Baby Watermelon. My plants are gowing well, both the one started from transplant and the ones from seed but no blossoms yet here in Maine.
I put mine in my back row bed that I mounded similar to my SFG raised beds so they have plenty of room.
I also planted them in my community garden rows. No raised beds allowed there.

This is the largest one in my community garden.

This one started from seed a little later is in my mounded bed at home.

I'm growing Sugar Babies this year for the first time. One question, how do I know when they are ripe and when to pick them?
Thanks!

To tell you the truth, I've never thought about it. I've always just watched everything and when it seems ripe to me, I feel it, smell it, etc. Sorry couldn't be more specific. Can't wait for them to ripen this year. I got to them real late last year and they were still delicious.

What is your sling made of?

Re: My Sugar Babies
LOL!!! the sling is a very old pair of silvery/glittery panty hose that was in the back of the closet. i think now i need to find a pair of bigger hose as these were from when i was very skinny and even cut in half length-wise don't seem wide enough for the baby melon.
the seed pack says they will get 8-10" in diameter. i think this is 5-6. it just doen't seem "ready" yet to me, but this is completely going by intuition - something at which i'm not very good.
