When to harvest yellow Zuchinni? Empty When to harvest yellow Zuchinni?

Hi there, this is my first year growing yellow Zuchinni (Golden Delight). I am growing green ones as well and they seem to be pretty easy to grow and harvest.

I harvested my first yellow one last night. We had 2 fruit that were growing for about a week but they were still about 8" long when harvested. We left them for about a week waiting for them to grow but they seemed to have stopped, so last night we picked them. When I cut it open, about half looked like a normal Zuch: soft and seedy.

The other half was still solid white and hard. Just wondering if we left it too long or not long enough? Are the yellow ones different then the green ones? We are in the middle of a heatwave and drought here in Southern Ontario, could that be the reason? I have been watering every day.

Thanks for any pointers.

That is normal for the yellow summer squash. The seeds are found in the rounder fatter part of the fruit and not usually in the neck of the fruit. An 8" summer squash is practically perfect. If one lets it go longer than that it often becomes tough and I usually end up taking the skin off if that is the case.

OK thanks for the info. So would you cook the entire thing, or just the seedy part?

The entire thing, less the stem and blossom ends.

I'm so jealous you have yellow zucchini - I found some locally here a couple of years ago and liked it so much - it was so much easier to keep track of, so seldom ever had one grow to gigantic size because it blended in with the rest of the plant. Mine grew very much like the regular, green zuch. I always try to pick them small before the seeds start to mature. So I don't know why the two sides would be different. As long as it tastes good, I would cook and eat the whole thing. Enjoy!
