Being from the PNW I actually get that. Drizzle doesn't count, showers don't count, REALLY heavy fog doesn't count (even when you have to use the windshield wipers to see down the road). Only actual rain counts.

Choksaw,

How many dill plants are you planning on planting to attract those ladybugs? It looks like you consider companion planting a little to help out with your gardening. I like that idea as I do some of that myself.

I plant Borage near my tomato plants. It usually brings in the bees, and is supposed to help the flavour and growth of the tomato plant too.

Nice trellises your boxes are beautiful.

Curious about ladybugs. What do they do for your garden? I actually have some crawling around my seedlings in my basement, and at first thought it was real cute, but 2 months later i have like 100 dead lady bug carcasses on the floor. Last summer we actually were SWARMED with them in august, like so many the cuties were grossing me out. They have never been a problem to my garden but I didnt like having to run through hundreds of them to get in and out of the door.

In my area of the country they eat aphids (the ants farm them, if you have small ants you could also have aphids) They can die in a basement of hunger or thirst.

Sometimes they seem to swarm an area because the trees (often willow here) are full of aphids.

I have planted 4 dill and will be adding 4 sweet basil near the tomatoes never thought of borage and am considering getting some lavander (they smell awesome) and some chives as well but we will wait on see how this season goes because if it all works out well i have a remodel/addition ill be adding to my box's (yes there will be pictures of the addition lol)

Lady bugs, stick bugs, praying mantis, and a parasitic wasp (the tomatoe horn worm one) are benificial bugs to your garden they feed on all the nasties that invade and munch on your plants another good solution is to plant dwarf marigolds in or around some of your plants as the smell drives off certain bugs (not sure which ones)

Im trying to take as many pictures as i can 1 for the forums and 2 for facebook because i have a few friends who are gardening through me vicariously since they live in apartments and such lol

While Dill has some attractive features, according to this:

DILL: Improves growth and
health of cabbage. Do not plant near carrots, caraway or tomatoes.
Best friend for lettuce. Attracts hoverflies
and predatory wasps. Repels aphids and spider mites to some degree.
Also may repel the
dreaded squash bug! (scatter some good size dill leaves on plants
that are suspect to
squash bugs, like squash plants.) Dill goes well with lettuce,
onions,
cabbage, sweet corn and
cucumbers. Dill does attract the tomato horn worm so it would be
useful to plant it
somewhere away from your tomato plants to keep the destructive horn
worm away from them.
Do plant dill in an appropriate spot for the swallowtail butterfly
caterpillars to feed on. Even their
caterpillars are beautiful.

.... you may want to not plant them near your tomatoes since they may attract the tomato hornworm!!

Suddenly I am happy to be out of the forest.

Deborah ....was missing her birds, but birds require trees with those "whirlybirds" (I think we called um whirligigs).

You know you have grown up when maple seeds are a pain instead of a delight.

Looks awesome, choksaw! I'm interested in how your garden grows, especially since I grew up in Venice, FL and still have family there. My brother in Venice is jealous of my WA SFG, but it looks like you're doing just fine and he has no excuse!

I remember trying to have a garden in Venice as a kid - we just amended the ground sand a bit. Disaster! SFG is the way to go!

Thanks so much for posting these pictures! And I mean it, because it inspired me so much, I used it as a reference to make a box of my own. The only difference is that I painted the outside white. All I have to do now is start planting! Thanks again!
