What are these BuGs?
These tiny black bugs are inside my pumpkin flowers.
They are small like fleas, but they're not fleas.
Does anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them?

Re: What are these BuGs?
I'm not sure about the bugs, but what is that white powder all over your plants?
Re: What are these BuGs?
I don't know what those bugs are, but I don't know that they will hurt your plant either.
Re: What are these BuGs?
humm, IDK either, but Megan i think in another thread the powder was said to be ok, not mildew but some sort of plant powder.

That's Food Grade DE(diatomacious earth), it's made from shell fossils.
It's supposed to keep the bug population down.
Oh well, maybe I would have huge bug colonies if I didn't use it.

Oh! Okay. Sorry if I missed a previous reference. My squash are just starting to leaf out and I am paranoid. ;-)
Re: What are these BuGs?
i dont know what the bugs are but i see them all over alot of flowers, especially one shaped like those. they dont seem to hurt the plants, IMO i think maybe they help with pollination. but i cant gaurantee it.

Get over the idea that you have to keep all insects out, most are perfectly harmless and many are in fact beneficial.

I would like to know what they are, and if they are doing some of the damage to my plants.

Re: What are these BuGs?
I dont think it is unreasonable to want to know what a bug is, whether it is beneficial or not.

Re: What are these BuGs?
If they spring away like a flea when you poke at them they are springtails. They are harmless.
If not, they look pretty harmless anyway -- they are so small I can't imagine they take very big bites!

Re: What are these BuGs?
1chichi and chocolatepop, I do agree with you. I understand - and agree with - Jtwenting's observation - we can't keep them all out. But they do range from beneficial, to harmless, to a little harmful, to .
Just as an aside - powdery mildew on pumpkins (which you don't have!) is not harmful. On most other plants it is.
I had a volunteer pumpkin a few years ago that had powdery mildew. I thought I was lucky, but turns out it really isn't a problem.
