gardening in PI

I sent the link to my friend and her husband in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. They just bought a house that has a flat roof and 300+ sq meters of empty lot. Right now the lot is full of crushed concrete block from a house that didn't get finished. They hope to have a veggie/fruit tree space with an ornamental pond and shady seating space within 5 years. First thing going in will be a row of banana trees to provide shade while they work on the rest. Your experiences should be a big help for them. My first question: are all the ingredients for Mels Mix available in PI, and what can/should be substituted. Told them to start a compost pile in one corner right away. Please include any links to other forums for them to consult.
