Watermelons/melons fruiting habits

So my watermelons bloomed galore, and produced two watermelons that's almost reached their full size at this point. It will be a little while before they are ripe. Meanwhile, the vines are still growing fast, and little watermelon embryos are everywhere, and some of them dropped their heads down, as if they were fertilized, but they are not growing.
Are they waiting for the big brothers to get picked? How does it usually work? Same about melons, or they behave differently?

not melons...but my cucumbers have done the same thing, esp. with an almost-ripe fruit on the vines...

edit..
I should mention that as soon as I harvest, then they go ballistic again and produce more cucs.

Funny enough my pepper plants have done the same thing too. One pepper at a time per plant. All the other blossoms turn yellow and drop.
