Hot Beds for Winter Gardening

An excellent way to keep growing vegetables throughout the winter in our northern climates is to make Hot Beds, which uses buried greens & browns (manure & straw) to generate heat as it composts down. This is not a new design, but an old technique that has been used for generations (my great grandfather brought this with him when he migrated from England in the 1800's). I used these types of beds up until I was able to get a small greenhouse.

Very interesting. I liked how he mentioned building the compost pile all at once in order to generate the heat. I think one would have to wait until the new compost dropped below 140-160*F. ?? So OG, are you building one between Christmas and New Years? Very Happy

A few years ago I would have built one in the fall, but now that I have a greenhouse......not so much.
