Hi all: I'm new to the site, but not new to square foot gardening. I've been doing this since 2006. In fact, I moved my "garden" in 2006 around the end of July. Now I have bigger (more permanent) beds ~ three of them ~ and I'm looking forward to a great garden this summer... hopefully hotter and drier than last year!!

Well now, that is a good question. I was a more traditional gardener who just got fed up with all the work. And... in the year that I started, we happened to be moving and I wanted to be able to 'move' my garden. So... advice for newbies. Just relax with it. It really is EASY to grow things. If you put seeds in the ground and give them a bit of water, they really will grow. That's what they're "programmed" to do. I love the simplicity of SFG and I love not needing all my tools any more!!!

Actually, I had soil in my garden room (not heated but plenty of south windows) that is ready to plant. So the other day I fixed up one of my portable boxes (3x2) and planted my first square of peas. We'll see. The seed packet says mid-April, so I may be a bit early. But the garden room doesn't get down much below 0C (that's 32F) these nights and during the day it's up as high as 15C (about 60F). So... I'm going to give it a try. I'm so anxious to get going as the grass appears and the ground opens up!!

Hi, I'm in Ontario too!

With your peas and lettuce if you do polytunnels over your beds now in March, let them heat up for about a week to 2 weeks, you should be able to plant outside fairly soon. Last year I had tomatoes going in April Smile

I'm north of Belleville, enjoying the warmer weather... but not the rain!
