Hello from Ontario Canada!

Hi there!
I am the mother of 2 boys, ages 2 and 5. I do home daycare, my husband is a OR nurse and has an irrigation business that he runs in the summer. We live about an hour north of Toronto in Ontario. This is my first attempt an any type of gardening although I usually grow herbs and some lettuce in pots. My 5 year old is already showing a great interest in gardening so I am looking forward to spending many hours this summer with him tending to our garden.
My brother built me a 4 x 8 foot box out of cedar that is awaiting MM. Finding the ingredients was not as difficult as I had thought with the compost being the most difficult to track down but I think I am covered. I want to grow tomatoes, cucs, peppers, beans, onions, lettuce, carrots, beets and radishes. I am also going to try some potatoes in a utility bucket and see how that goes. I will probably start most things from plants that I buy. Starting everything from seed this year is impossible. I will tackle the basics of gardening before I attempt to start from seed next year - a whole new project! I still need to figure out what I am going to do for a trellis but I figured I will span the whole length of the box along the north side (fence).
I am so happy to have found this forum and I am sure I will be taking advantage of all the wisdom and experience of the members!

If you go back to the Home page there is a picture of it and if you click on it, it will take you to the Square Foot G. Foundation website where you can click on the book and get more info. You can also find it at bookstores.
Once again welcome and enjoy the forum

Hi aerinh123 ,
Welcome to the site .
My parents in law used ( deceased ) to live in St Catherins about 300 yards from lock one on the canal.
FIL ..Eric introduced me to the old style of SFG by Mel back in 1997 .
When the weather permitted he grew most of his own fresh veg in four sets of beds 8 x 4 ft made from hollow concrete blocks two high . It was a delight to see how he did it all .
He grew celery , bell peppers , chilli, peas , lettuce ,tomatoes , beet root , cabbages and kale etc.etc.
He had set his cellar up as a bar/ games , TV room adding a heated &lluminated grow bed to a dividing wall as a feature of the cellar area . It was impressive to see his plants being started in the bed and see him transplant some out several times whilst we were there .
