Ohio Gardener's Greenhouse
A long held dream has finally come true! Today my birthday gift was delivered - a 10' x 12' greenhouse! We worked with an Amish builder to custom design and build the greenhouse for us, and six weeks later it has finally arrived. Now I have a lot of work to get electricity and gas to it, shelving installed, and a small raised bed installed and filled with the grow mix. Can't wait to get it growing!

Put the raised bed in its final position, and filled it so that it is ready to plant. The bottom 10" of the bed is filled with the topsoil that was removed to make the gravel bed for the greenhouse, and the top 8" is filled with modified MM (Homemade compost, composted cow manure, peat, coarse vermiculite, and Azomite rock dust). Have a few seedlings that will soon be ready to transplant into the bed -- Kale, Swiss Chard, Bok Choy, and Chinese Cabbage.

Those are bunching onion seeds covered with medium vermiculite. Don't know if they will grow in a greenhouse environment, but giving it a try. Had some leftover seeds, and just threw them in. Usually I start them in 72 cell trays and then transplant them at 16 per square.

Re: Ohio Gardener's Greenhouse
A beautiful, warm day for November 1st! It is a balmy 65ºF outside, and much warmer in the greenhouse. This afternoon I transplanted the Kale, Bok Choy, and Chinese Cabbage seedlings into the raised bed inside the greenhouse. All of the seedlings have grown to the point that their roots are going through the sides of the Cow Pots they are in, so it was time to transplant. Hoping to see some rapid growth of these plants now that they are in the rich compost.

Watching.
Any leaf lettuces? I crave fresh lettuce in the winter as a raw veggie.

Yes, I direct sowed Black Seeded Simpson and Romaine lettuce, and some Perpetual Spinach seeds. We're still harvesting lettuce from one of the outside beds, and hopefully the ones I sowed in the greenhouse will be ready to start picking by the time we get the killing freezes in December.
We have fresh lettuce or spinach for nearly every dinner meal.

I grew the lettuce pack in my aerogarden last winter and was very happy with it—produced a lot of lettuce!
Looks very nice, OG. Love the set-up!

I grew lettuce in the AeroGarden last winter, too, but it quickly bolted to seed. So, I pulled out the lettuce and replanted with new seeds. It grew good, and we got a lot of lettuce from it, but then it bolted to seed, too. Not sure what I'll put in it this year.
The greens in the greenhouse raised bed are really growing right now. Can't wait until we get to start harvesting some of it!
The plants on the left are Chinese Cabbage, then there are some Bok Choy, Swiss Chard, and to the far right are Lacinato Kale (the slowest growing plants)

Re: Ohio Gardener's Greenhouse
We have a local mushroom farm, and I took my truck over there to get a couple yards of mushroom compost to put on the flower beds. When I made the MM for the raised bed in the greenhouse, I decided to add some of the mushroom compost to the mixture. Today, I can see the results of the mushroom compost in the mixture....

Wow! I wonder if they are the same edible variety that the mushroom grower raised. Was the compost the traditional manure and hay, or sawdust?

Don't know, but I'm going to take a picture over when I go to get another load of compost to ask if they can identify them. They use horse manure with straw from the local racetrack stables.

Re: Ohio Gardener's Greenhouse
A funny comment about greenhouse gardening. Hired a guy to dig a trench for gas & electric lines to the greenhouse, and he did a super job. He was really interested in the greenhouse, and wondered what can be grown in it over the winter. I told him that it would be mostly greens, such as lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, and kale. He said, "But you can't grow any vegetables?" I sort of laughed, and said "well, I do have some cucumbers planted in there..." Turned out he doesn't eat any "greens", a "meat and potatoes" guy.
Meanwhile, I'm looking forward the first harvest of Bok Choy in about a week.

Wonderful afternoon working in the greenhouse. 20ºF outside, but 76ºF in the greenhouse. Harvested the first Napa Cabbage today. Lettuce (Black Seeded Simpson and Romaine) and spinach (Bloomsdale) are growing nicely, too. Soon will be harvesting Swiss Chard as well.

Not worried about a burner plate as long as they don't mess with my coffee maker! LOL
