Getting ready to SFG
I'm in a small town in Pennsylvania and i just heard about Square Foot Gardening. Haven't even bought my book yet but I am already planning out my garden for next year. I have a lot of prep work to do because my yard is a disaster. Last summer it was completely neglected and overrun with weeds. A lot of the grass died and so did 2 cherry trees
I did manage to get some tomatoes and peppers and lilies in this year but my soil is absolutely awful. I also managed to create a temporary compost pile and a temporary anaerobic compost area. I recently scored some scrap wood so i plan on making some beds soon.
I am really looking forward to learning and improving everything that i am working on. Thank you for being here!!!

Welcome, CarrieZ! So glad you are beginning this journey. It is so completely different that anything you have experienced….get ready!
I have advice—keep great notes. Every year is different. I say start small, as this intensive method really delivers.
Read the book—Mel Bartholomew was a genius. It is truly amazing what your can produce from a 4x4’!
What zone are you or where are you? I can’t wait to see what you discover.

Thank you for the welcome. I am in zone 6a/6b. I actually have been keeping notes and it has already helped me figure out things that i need to do different next year.
I have 21 tomato and 10 pepper plants this year. I was thinking of doubling that and adding a few other first time plants for next year. Do you think that's too ambitious?

Re: Getting ready to SFG
Ambitious is in the eye of the gardener and how much work. You will have to source coarse or super coarse vermiculite, bales of compressed peat moss and as many different sources as you can find locally. We don't use fertilizer, only composts for feeding the plants.
It you have noxious, persistent native plants that may come up into the beds, you may have to consider elevating the beds off the ground. There are 87 threads on table top beds. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/search?search_keywords=table+top+bed&typerecherche=interne&show_results=topics
