5b... Cover up tonite Empty Another cold night!

Post  jenjehle 4/18/2010, 12:06 am

I realize this was originally posted in early April but we have another cold night coming tonight. Maybe even colder than when this was first posted! I heard only high 20's tonight! So I covered up all my greens that I could. Recently, I realized that my large city recycle bins are just the right size to turn upside down and put on top of my veggies already popping up through the soil. So along with the bins, a few cut in 1/2 milk jugs, some empty cat litter containers and a large piece of visqueen drapped over one of the beds, I'm prepared for battle.

As of now, I have green onions, broccoli, cauliflower, various lettuces and strawberries. Hopefully, they'll all be ok this time tomorrow.

Putting that electric blanket back on the bed and turning in for a cold night!

Keep warm fellow gardeners!

Question?

If the crops that are planted now are cold crops, then why would a frost hurt them?

Thanks

Fromw hat I have researched, which makes sense, is that even young tender cole crop seedlings can succeptable to a frost. It is the older more mature cole crops that can handle it.

My lettuce are still in a hoop, cole have a row cover over them all the time because ive seen the flutter of white wings recently. Everything else will just have a slow germination.

that being said, so far so good on everything that has gotten a little nippy.

Even though they are cold weather crops, intense frost, esp down into the 20's, can't be great for any plant. Yes, some can tolerate the frost but others can't. Esp if they are new seedlings just getting started. Some lettuces are pretty delicate, from what I've read.

Also, a cold weather crop, I thought, just meant that it grows better and thrives in the colder type temperatures. Most of the cold weather crops are sensitive to the intense heat of mid-summer and just grow better during the cooler type temps.

Hope this helps! I'm no expert; just giving my understanding on this topic.

here's the fun 'secret' to gardening. do what you want and learn. if things don't make it in the cold, then make a note (mental or othewise) and plant something different at this time of year. i am not into a lot of coddling of my plants - i have 3 kids and life happens. so if my plants make it, great. if not, well, i'll just try something different next time.

and remember too, anything you don't like or dies, makes great compost. so it's not a loss. Smile
