Hello from Maine
I was a member several years ago as quiltbea (had to rejoin as quitbea42) and then moved to a retired residence and no gardening. No garden areas for the residents back then. But this year, lo and behold, they offered to build us some raised beds. I am now the proud owner of one of them, 4' by 8' and 12 inches deep. Filled with top-grade soil for our first growing season, but this came about early this month so I got a late start. I am once again a square-foot gardener.
I hopefully anticipated this bed so ordered some small bush-type tomatoes along with seeds for a bush cucumber and some mini-red peppers. Happily I now have 4 tomato plants growing, 2 Red Robin which only grow about 12" tall and 2 Lizzanos which grow a bit taller, but still have an abundance of small, tasty tomatoes. I thought to order small plants in case the plan for the raised beds fell thru and I could grow these in pots.
Happily I have a small garden going now. With greens in the form of Aruguala, Kale, Lettuces, Salad Burnet, and some radishes.
For flowering plants to attract bees, I sowed Nasturtiums and Lemon Gold Marigolds. These are double duty since they are edible as well.
Can you tell I am 'over the moon' with happiness. Glad to be back. Love this forum.

Re: Hello from Maine
QB is back!! Getting a 4'x8' bed is fantastic. I think having a community gardens at retirement centers is important.
Re: Hello from Maine
Sanderson, you are so right. Since I got the news of raised beds for residents, my life perked up considerably and every day I have something to look forward to which I enjoy.
They should be mandatory for all retired residences.
Today we are having extremely hot temps for Maine, in the 90sF for 3 days including tomorrow. Thankfully in Maine the nights drop down to the 60s and 70s just the same. I put out white fabric clipped to bamboo poles to shade my plants today and the wind was whipping them around something fierce. I found a twin white sheet still in the package so I will use that tomorrow to make a tent over the bed.
Hopefully my lettuce, kale, radishes and arugula will come thru just fine with this extra help.
