September is National Preparedness Month
As gardeners, many of us freeze, can, & dehydrate our harvests for winter/spring eating until we can start the process over again.
But preparedness is more than just food. It's winterizing our homes, making sure our cars are ready for snow/ice/yuckiness & getting stuck away from home & or having no power for extended periods. It's also information we need to keep on hand if we need to evacuate - photos should be scanned, paperwork (mortgages/car deeds/wills) should be scanned, printed, & perhaps laminated. A stick/dvd should be kept off-site or in a fire & water-resistant safe with all of this important info.
Each state & county has a disaster preparedness department. If you go to ready.gov, it can link you in to local resources.
Unfortunately many people do not take advantage of the information that's offered. We see this with every weather disaster... Many counties offer preparedness fairs during September. Get involved! Share your love of SFG. Just this alone would so helpful to so many.
Get prepared yourself. You can't do it all at once. Just like our gardens, it's a long-term process. But pick something this month to get ready for winter (or this hurricane!).
