Re: Update on Marie's mom
My aunt sent me this. She's going to have to have the same procedure within the next few months...
https://www.umassmemorialhealthcare.org/umass-memorial-medical-center/services-treatments/heart-and-vascular/services-we-provide/transcatheter-aortic-valve-replacement-program
And apparently The Doctors did a show on it as well.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Morning. Wanted to give an update. We're meeting tomorrow am with the high-risk heart folks in Atlanta. They'll be doing a transesophogeal ultrasound to get some really clear photos of what's going on. Hopefully we'll get a surgery date set, but I'm anticipating a bit longer on that...
She's off the muscle relaxers, so much more "her". She's starting to get out & about meeting with friends, making her cards, etc. Still not driving, but she's talking about it.
In the meantime, I'm still out more than in... So I'll catch birthdays etc. when I can.

Oh, wow! I had no idea this was going on. So glad she has you! Here's positive and hopeful thoughts for good news and a good plan.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Thanks, Molly!!
Met with heart team yesterday. Her surgery will probably be about 6 weeks from now. She declined the clinical trial procedure. (Yea!)
If anyone here needs an aortic valve replacement & has been holding off, the FDA approved the "non-surgical" method for LOW-RISK patients the day before yesterday. Call your doctor!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Got a call yesterday afternoon. The heart surgery is set for Tuesday, Sept 4. They're actually not even calling it a surgery since they don't put her completely under. She'll have to spend 1 night in the hospital.
Progress...... I'm seeing progress....

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Okay, so upon further discussion, this is apparently a catheterization, testing to see just exactly what's going on in there... ??? I'm feeling very confused at this point. But it's apparently NOT the valve replacement.
But still progress! And thank you for your prayers & well wishes!!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
She's having an angiogram, then? I had one back in 2012. Sometimes they can go in through a wrist vein, which they did in my case, rather than the groin area.
My wrist was a bit bruised and sore for a while, but it wasn't a big deal.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Donna, yes, I guess so. Mom did mention dye, which is concerning to both of us. Her sister ended up on dialysis due to the dye shutting her kidneys down. So we'll be talking to them before this happens....
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Yes, I think that was one of my concerns, too. I did inquire, and apparently such reactions are pretty rare.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi everyone. Once again, if I missed your birthday the last couple of days, I apologize.
We spent a couple of days getting all of the remaining pre-tests done for this valve replacement. They should be calling her with a schedule within the next week or so.
While we were there, I managed to get her pain appointment that was set for the end of the month changed to yesterday.
The mri showed a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar region (in other words, arthritis, as we suspected). In addition, it showed that the L3 & L4 had been broken recently. We're guessing from the falls resulting from the leg collapsing on her. The L3 is a simple break. The L4 has compressed by 30% & is pushing other stuff. No wonder she's in so much pain!
Tuesday they're going to put an epidural in her back to see if that will relieve the pain. If it doesn't, she'll need to consider having surgery to rebuild the L4 & have them cement it together once she recovers from the valve replacement.
Not the quick-fix answers we were really hoping for... BUT answers regardless. And now we're getting a plan of attack together. So, progress once again! :-)

Re: Update on Marie's mom
OMG, Marie. I can't imagine how much pain she must be in. If it's like my hubby, with similar injuries, nothing alleviates it. He just suffers and lives with it.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Sorry to hear this about your mom, Marie. Prayers for her recovery.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
I also hope that the epidural alleviates your mom's pain.
My back surgery two years ago was about 95% successful, and my current pain is both minimal and sporadic, as opposed to excruciating and incapacitating. Therefore, I'm confident that your mother's back and heart treatments will be effective.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Marie, My mother had osteoporosis and continued fracturing lumber vertebrae right up until the end. The cementing helped her a lot.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
As a Special Procedures tech, I've been in on lots of Kyphoplastyies (fracture cementing) and they are usually performed percutaneously, or through the skin. A long "needle" is fluroscopically guided to the affected vertebral body and an epoxy-like cement is pumped in to "inflate' the collapsed areas and restore the vertebral body back up to it's original height and relieve the pressure on the nerves. It's a fast procedure and very effective.
Here's a video explaining it:

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Thanks everyone!
Yardslave, interesting video. Do you know what the success rate is for folks who have been fractured for over 6 weeks? We're looking at 3 months now & they won't do anything for at least another month.... IF she agrees to this. I will show this video to her tonight or tomorrow.
Sanderson, she HAD osteoporosis, but managed to get it back down to osteopenia. But we agreed with the pain doc that another scan is in order at this point...

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi Everyone. Talked to mom the last couple of days. The shot seems to be working. She's reporting about a 90% decrease in pain!! And she went driving yesterday without me being right behind her. She says she did fine, no problems. Yea....! Let's hope that continues!
