Update on Marie's mom
Hi everyone!
To the newcomers, I'm sorry I've been unable to greet you properly.
To the birthday boys & girls, I'm sorry I've missed it....
Mom called while we were on our trip to TN a few days ago. She was in the emergency room. I was FINALLY able to get here the other day. She's been transferred to another hospital with better physical therapy conditions.
According to the MRI done the other day, when she fell the 2nd time due to her sciatica, she ended up tearing her rotator cuff in one arm. We're hoping the doctor will be in tomorrow to discuss the immediate future. I'm seeing a 99% chance of surgery.
So for right now, I'm in a state of flux. I'll keep you informed when I can. Cell & internet service here are terrible...

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Oh, your poor mom. Her shoulder must really hurt. With proper care and physical therapy, shoulder surgery should be successful and give her relief and restore movement. Both Boffer and my husband had the surgery.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi guys. As of late this afternoon, mom was informed that the ortho guy feels that her shoulder is inoperable. She's requested a 2nd opinion by a different surgery. Boy, is she mad.....!
They had decided to release her on Monday, but now that's up in the air. I've decided to come home for a few days. Arrived about 10 minutes ago.
I'll let you know.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Went up for a couple of days, so I'm sorry if I missed any birthdays...
The shoulder IS inoperable. They're doing SEVERAL bouts of pt/ot daily & she's finding that she's able to do more than she anticipated. She's hoping to limit it to about a 10% disability & that some of the other muscles will take over.
She can knit without pain! So that's one huge concern down. The other one is her card-making. I don't think it will be a problem....
They're releasing her Monday afternoon, so I'm going back up on Monday & stay till whenever. We need to make sure she can drive, etc.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi everyone. Checking in. Got mom sprung from the hospital on Monday afternoon. She slept most of Tuesday. (Probably the best thing for her!) Wednesday we started experimenting on what works, what doesn't, changing things around.
Came home last night for a couple of days. Got a call first thing this morning that she had had an allergic reaction to something & is back in the hospital.
I'll let you know.... (All prayers, healing thoughts, etc gladly received!)

Marie,
Please continue sharing updates about your Mom. I hope she's doing better. Allergic reactions are no joke.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hopefully she'll be released today. A friend will be taking her home as Mike & I are working & she's insisting that I not come up. I'll be going back up tomorrow evening. They are NOT sure what caused the reaction.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
She's home. I'm going back up this afternoon. Got some interesting input from other family members who think the allergic reaction may be from the pain meds they put her on. And I'm open to advice, btw....
Re: Update on Marie's mom
I would love to talk to you about what the reaction looked like and what meds she was on, etc. PM me?

Sports medicine doctor
Marie,
Sorry to hear about your mom having the injured shoulder. I had that years ago and my second opinion came from a doctor of sports medicine. Regular doctors seem to be okay with us being a bit disabled but sports medicine doctors try harder to get us back to normal.
The surgery went fine; physical therapy was crappy but it was a necessary evil. I got back to work and never looked back.
Hope your mom regains her strength. Sending prayers your way.![I love you](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/herz.png)

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi Mary. Thank you! And welcome to the forum!! Glad you've found us!
For a further update: We tried driving yesterday. Left turns are okay. Right turns are a problem.... So something to talk to the pt folks about this afternoon. She also discovered that her stamina is way down. Well, being in a hospital for upwards of 5 weeks will do that. So she's devising a plan to get up & moving more. But all in all I'm quite pleased.
Looks like I'll probably be up here for a few more weeks yet.

Steering wheel
Marie, There is something that can be attached to the steering wheel to help make the turns. My husband attached one of these after he became disabled. Search using the key words handicap steering knob. Here is one example. Hope this helps.

THIS! THANK YOU, Carmelita! We had talked about something like this. I wasn't sure what it was called or where to start looking....
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Hi guys. Wanted to give you an update.
Met w/ the cardiologist this morning. She has severe aortic stenosis & will have to have some surgery sooner rather than later. It SHOULD be fairly non-invasive. (She wouldn't make it thru open heart surgery...) Her other surgery is on hold for the moment. The cardio guy is sending her to Atlanta where they will hopefully do both during the same hospital stay. He's concerned that if she has either surgery in her area, if it goes bad, it'll be VERY bad, very quickly. He's just not willing to take that chance.
Still not driving due to still not able to get shoes on. I DID pick up one of the steering wheel aids, so we'll be trying that.
At least we're getting some answers....

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Sanderson,
I may eventually need a similar procedure, so I was curious. Here's what I found:
A minimally invasive mitral valve replacement is a procedure to replace a poorly working mitral valve with an artificial valve without open heart surgery. The surgery is called “minimally invasive” because it uses a single small incision and specialized instruments rather than a larger incision for the traditional open repair.
