Lemon Balm Empty Lemon Balm

Post  countrynaturals 4/13/2019, 8:22 pm

I'm in love. I love you  Went to the local college plant sale, yesterday. Picked up lemon balm, just to be supportive. Forgot to water it. This morning it was a little wimpy, so when I watered the plant, I also wet down its leaves. WOW! The fragrance was intoxicating! It smells like lemon pie, lemon pudding, lemon cookies. Oh, my. I'm off to discover what wonders I can perform with this awesome herb. rahrah

FYI, it doesn't have spider mites. The way the sun is reflecting off the leaves, it looks bad. After I saw the pic, I went running out to check. It's perfectly healthy.

I LOVE lemon balm!!! I had some on the deck & it seeded itself below the deck. Now I have this nice big bunch. It DOES spread... It's a member of the mint family & we all know how invasive that can be.

Great medicinal for anxiety, etc.

Now I'm intrigued. May just have to add it to the potted plant area. Very Happy

Lemon Balm Empty Lemon Balm Planting?

Post  mrcmb99 4/20/2019, 10:54 am

I got a free sample of seeds of this stuff.  Can I plant it in my square foot garden or will is spread and takeover?  I'm pretty new to all this stuff, but I have heard that some herbs will takeover the garden...

Thanks!

I'd start it out in a container until it gets established. After that, you could take cuttings and start more wherever you want. IMHO, it's not a "prime space" candidate for the sfg, but that's just me. I'm kind of a maverick around here. Please take my opinion with a grain of salt. bounce

Lemon Balm, aka Balm Mint, is a very aggressive spreading mint plant which grows up to 5' tall. Not a good candidate for the SFG.

I agree. I WANT it to take over the area where it seeded itself. But I know I'll have to trim it consistently & keep an eye on the spread.

Also, mrcmb99, the seeds tend to be difficult to germinate. DOABLE, but difficult. (Not as bad as stevia!)
