OK, I cannot believe it is already September!  It was such an interesting season...Spring was wet, Summer, cool for the most part.  Fall?  Yet to be told!  I again failed to get a fall crop of anything going...whatever.

What are your observations from your locales?   Do you have things still producing?

I have peppers, straggler maters.  Potatoes in and dying back.  So soon.  Some cukes!!!!  Love them.

Bummed that i didn't get any lettuces in for fall....always do this! Rolling Eyes

Maybe you can still pick up a 6 pack or 2 of lettuce at a nursery?

Still eating gobs of green leafies here and harvesting cherry Tom's, ground cherries, green beans, zukes and April carrots one by one.

Hark...is that a Banana pepper I see next to the carrot forest? And maybe a couple of tiny cukes?

Still some maters and taters....hopefully a few cukes..... N&C Midwest - September 2017 3170584802 .....

The peppers are called "Fooled you" jalapenos. Mine are very prolific.

Excited!!!!

Got my used (old library book) The New Victory Garden ( Bob Thomson ) in the mail from Amazon today.  This book is not in print.  The old PBS series was a staple in my early years, and based on CC's reference, I bought it pretty cheap.  ($10)

It is what you remember from the Victory Garden, which is in-ground gardening.  Which I am not interested in.

But lots of great info and pics...

Garden wise, whole lotta things coming out this weekend.  A few going in;  radishes, spinach, lettuce, mustard.

Ordered my garlic!!!!  Pinetree German Hardneck.  It did so well for me last year!  Will go in after Halloween.

Warming up here again.  I am going to also start some mache in the herb containers, and more in the ground cherry container for the patio.  That stuff is delicious, if you have never tried it.  Last year I put just a few plants in, and it remained evergreen all winter in the SFG.  I think this year I am just going to thickly sow it as a carpet, and maybe I can get a nice bunch every once in a while.  So sweet!

Thanks for the reminder. I've tried it twice and couldn't even get it to sprout. I'll give it another chance now that the hot weather is over. Cool

Yeah, mache is slow to come up. Thanks for the reminder - I need to check the squares I seeded. The ones I sowed should be or should have been up by now. I noticed the volunteer mache are starting to come up. Maybe I'll just move those...

Yes, I just remembered it.  Starting it tomorrow.  I just remember how surprised I was at the sweet taste!  But small plants and leaves....but a survivor!

Getting rained on now, so will do some heavy lifting out in the actual dirt!

Melons over.  Got 2 watermelons, my last 2 Sakatas Sweets, and the other muskmelons are done.  PM moved in, but so did short days!  Cukes done too.  Will wait until MM dries out to get the Yukon Golds out.

N&C Midwest - September 2017 Empty garlic in containers?

Post  nrstooge 9/20/2017, 6:25 pm

I've been remiss about posting on my patio garden/containers - using SFG for spacing of plants, etc.

I just received my fall garlic - will this do ok in container?

Yes. People have been successful with garlic in containers.  I tried it once and critters found it first.  Came up about 4" in the early winter, I mulched heavily to protect it with leaves, and in Spring, zip.  But it is done in containers, might want to put a barrier (piece of screen or something?) over it--and mulch well!

Thanks for the picture!  Nice!

Also might add this; the other theory of my total garlic loss from winter 2015-16 was the up and down, super cold super warm weather.  Thus the possibility of freezing/thawing etc. damaging the plants, so I might try ot minimize the volatility of the temperature, maybe put the container in a protected spot that will still get some moisture.

What about others?

It's still very green right now, so I need to be patient. Weather looks great for the next five days with lots of sun and daily highs around 80 to 86F. Hopefully that will help to move it along.

Oh yeah, melons love the heat!  I can't wait to hear what you think, they are my hands-down favorite melon.  I am a fan of honeydew anyways, and I love the fact that you can eat the skin!  And they are generally prolific, but this year was not good for my yields.  Late start, not hot enough early....PM and I didn't timely do the milk spray, my bad!
