N&C Midwest—September 2021
Well it is September already! Where has this year gone? I say that every year…it is dry here, but nothing comparing to some other parts of the US.
I have tomatoes to harvest, and some peppers. Cucumbers are on the way out. Dragon Tongue beans are done. Will need to get some radishes in for Fall—I love them! Maybe some other quick maturing veggies. There are melons too, although none of my larger varieties made it this year. And squash, of course!

It is no longer dry here, we have had rain every day since last Thursday, and have accumulated a little over 5" of rain in that time. It has been much needed rain, though, and it has been nice being able to turn off the irrigation system for a while.

Cleaned out the bed with beans in it, and refreshed with a couple inches of compost. Planted some more Giant of Sicily radish seeds.
Still harvesting a lot of vegetables, including tomatoes, summer squash, cucumbers, kale, chard, spinach, lettuce, and green onions. Have Cushaw, Banana, Red Kuri, and Butternut winter squash growing and nearing maturity.

Re: N&C Midwest—September 2021
I have had a few sweet bananas turn red before, most are yellow though. Pretty! I like red and green jalapeños too just for the look!
I just picked 3 large-ish cucumbers, 3 Red Kuri, 3 large tomatoes, lots of various cherries and my first yellow pears, 3 squashes, 3 Sakatas Sweets and a purple pepper! Notice the theme?
I had to water, although apparently it is supposed to rain. We will see! Things are slowing down and browning out there…adding water to the pool for the umpteenth time.

SR, yesterday I drove through Ada on the way north to pick up some Azomite, and I could not believe how dry it was around the Ada area! Much of the grass and fields was just burned up. Apparently none of the 6" of rain we got in the past week made it that far north. We are getting rain again this afternoon. I hope you are getting some.

Oh you have no idea! We have had very little rain all summer! It has been nuts! Northwest Ohio is dry dry dry.OhioGardener wrote:SR, yesterday I drove through Ada on the way north to pick up some Azomite, and I could not believe how dry it was around the Ada area! It is raining at the moment. I did water my poor containers today though.

Daily watering of the patio container garden is still ongoing. Though, I'm getting ready for fall sowing - I've done tatsoi, pak choi, kale, beets, carrots already, I still need to do the lettuce, radish and spinach. Also getting small containers in the patio greenhouse planted up.

Refreshed the oldest, original bed with some vermiculite and coconut coir, and then topped with home made compost. Haven't decided whether to cover the bed with straw for the winter, or to plant a cover crop on it. Fall is in the air....

You guys are doing better than I am! I did water containers yesterday, should pick some tomatoes today. I think I will try to put some herbs in the cold frame this year. They are so expensive!
Everything else is really slowing down and looking crunchy and brown. Part of me is good with it! Seasons

SR, did you get the fall beets and carrots planted this fall? Mine have been enjoying the cooler weather, and are about 6" high already. I accidentally pulled out one of the beets this morning, so just ate the leaves off it....

No, I have taken a vacation the last couple years at the exact wrong time, plus it is so hot here this time of year. My excuses. I really hate the heat. If I were not working, I would be able to do something in the morning, before it gets too hot and humid.OhioGardener wrote:SR, did you get the fall beets and carrots planted this fall? Radishes are all I really have time for, maybe spinach.

Life likes to get in the way, doesn't it? Since retiring 20-some years ago, I've really enjoyed gardening.

Re: N&C Midwest—September 2021
How ya'll are.???? Just to let ya'll know, I'm still kicking. Just not as high as I used to. lol. I know Ive been a little tardy posting pics this summer but didn't grow anything to really brag about. It was a long, hot, dry summer here but it's finally cooling down.
Got fall crop going now and doing pretty well. Last month, I planted carrots and Georgia collards TWO times and NOTHING came up. Thought I'd post a few pics of my fall crop.
Broccoli

Cauliflower.

Cabbage

Turnips
