Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
Last fall I tried a couple plants of this variety. During the winter they grew to be massive so I removed from the herb bed. This is the result of starting seedlings indoors this spring. They are light pinkish-purple (mauve), not the brilliant colors that are for flower bed colors. From top to bottom: yesterday's bloom, today's bloom, spent flower (eventually it will dry and act like a salt shaker with bakery poppy seeds) and finally a new flower bud. For opening, it will suddenly go upright.
Re: Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
I've been thinking about trying those... Do you think they'd be better in a container? Or would they work in my deck planters I have along the top rail? How big do they get?
Re: Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
Two feet tall or so. Mine are in a 24" diameter planter. I love them so far, that is, until they fell over in the heat. I have them staked but still managed to fall over again today. Think it might be the killer heat?
Re: Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
Hmmm.... Gee..... Lemme think.....
Probably! ;-)
So, 2 ft. I see more buckets in my future. Think that'd be better than the window boxes.
Thanks for the info.

Re: Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
What about scattering the planting between pots, OSSFG and BTE areas? See what works out best? I will definitely get them out earlier next year or do a fall planting as they survive mild freeze. This is the third day of drooping. The flowers aren't raising their heads and opening. All of the leaves are crispy. They are under the shade cloth so there wasn't much more I could do.

Boy, y'all are just having a miserable time... Yeah, all of those suggestions should work.
And you know how I am about taking notes! :-)

Poppy on 4th day of killer heat. They are under 75% shade cloth.

sanderson ... that is quite a sad transformation.
Here are our poppy plants. Not as pretty as yours (prior to them getting heat stroke).

This plant species will not grow for me...I have tried in all my panting homes...nope. Never did do it. But I drive past houses where they are literally naturalized. Maybe I need the old seeds?/

It looks like you may have some seed pods there on that thar poppy. Hint Hint.
Re: Poppy seeds - Hungarian Blue Breadseed
You are correct. I'm waiting for those pods to "mature" so that I can try to harvest the seeds that are inside them.SwampTroll wrote:trolleydriver wrote:sanderson ... that is quite a sad transformation.
