2018 - First Annual Seed Exchange Week - January 20-28 (Edited)
Dear SFGardeners,
This is the time when everyone is reading the new seed catalogs, and many are getting ready to winter sow or start seeds indoors. I discussed seed swapping with sanderson and TD and they gave me the go ahead to try something new. We will be beta testing a designated week of seed swapping. If it goes well, we can have an annual seed exchange week.
The beta swap will run January 20-28, 2018 to give everyone a few days to pull their lists together and get them posted.
General Rules:
Members should contact each other directly (PM) for mailing and postage.
Sometimes seeds available do not line up with seeds wanted. It is alright to ask for seeds without having to send seeds. Just cover postage.
List seeds to share. List the name (plus scientific name if known), list the number of packets available, list the number of seeds per packet, the year harvested, and whether you saved the seeds or purchased them.
List seeds you would like to receive, separately.
Example:
SEEDS AVAILABLE by M. Gardener
Tomato, var. Snow Fairy - 2 packets - 6 seeds per packet - Baker Creek 2016
Pepper, var. Cayenne - 4 packets - 10 seeds per packet - 2017 harvest
SEEDS DESIRED by M. Gardener
Bok choy, var. Ching Chang - 10 seeds
Ready! Set! Go!

Ginger, Thank you for doing this. Many hands make for light work.
Re: 2018 - First Annual Seed Exchange Week - January 20-28 (Edited)
This IS a great idea! Thanks, Ginger.
I've actually got a spreadsheet. Some of you have it. You know I have a lot of seeds.... Willing to share!
I cannot start a PM (something about Windows 10, I guess). But I can answer them. If you want my spreadsheet to see what I've got, PM me with an email address & I'll send it to you. Then we can go from there! :-)

Sounds like fun, Ginger. I have more than I need of everything I can think of, but I will be watching -- just in case.
Re: 2018 - First Annual Seed Exchange Week - January 20-28 (Edited)
CN, Do have extra seeds you could share? This would be a good time to evaluate.
Re: 2018 - First Annual Seed Exchange Week - January 20-28 (Edited)
Absolutely. That's why I'll be watching to see if anybody wants something I have.sanderson wrote:CN, Do have extra seeds you could share? This would be a good time to evaluate.

Watching is great for members' wish list, but please post something that you know you can share. Otherwise, we will all just be watching.
I'm working on my seeds today (finally). Hopefully tonight or tomorrow I can post.

Sanderson and TD, thanks for your input and encouragement! I'm glad to hear that a few folks would like to participate. Hopefully we'll get enough interest to make this an annual event!

Nag, nag, nag! Truth is -- I'm kinda scared of that seed box. It's huge and overflowing. I can't imagine what might crawl out of there if I open it.sanderson wrote:Watching is great for members' wish list, but please post something that you know you can share. Due to my location (Canada), I am opting out. I'm not sure it would be cost effective (postage wise) for me to be involved.sanderson wrote:Crickets. Is anyone else planning to add their seeds and wish list?

I didn't list my seeds dated 2015, if there's something I've mentioned previously that someone is interested in just ask. Honestly, I don't know how much I have in terms of extras (i.e. how many seeds) I tried to guess, but sort of ran out of motivation toward the end and I'm going to just post what I've got typed up.

Cilantro – harvested 2016?, no idea which variety/varieties these are offspring of... some have holes (from wasps that ate the inside of the seed as grubs and then flew away.) I planted those without holes in the basement (air temp ~50*F) under fluorescent grow lights and got at least some germination (didn’t measure/calculate.)

Sorry everyone -- I won't be able to participate and I won't be around much at all for the next few weeks. Our big, annual charity event is coming up soon and I'm having technical difficulties. I'm the webmaster and somehow our site is getting corrupted, causing everything I do to take 4 times as long as it should. By day's end I'm tearing out my hair, trying to figure out what's causing the issues. Right now, gardening isn't even on my radar.

Good for you for knowing when to say 'no'! And thanks for warning us of your absence. I wish you the best with getting the website to work -- and with your event! (And I'm sure I'll still have seeds to trade several weeks from now.)countrynaturals wrote:Sorry everyone -- I won't be able to participate and I won't be around much at all for the next few weeks. Thanks, Beetles. Things are looking up a bit. Maybe I'll be back a little sooner than I feared.BeetlesPerSqFt wrote:Good for you for knowing when to say 'no'! I am thinking the same thing, TD.trolleydriver wrote:Due to my location (Canada), I am opting out. I'm not sure it would be cost effective (postage wise) for me to be involved.sanderson wrote:Crickets. Is anyone else planning to add their seeds and wish list?
Perhaps we could post Canadian located seeds on the Canadian Regional Thread?
That will also eliminate any problem that could occure between countries?

KJ and TD, Sure. A Canadian seed exchange is up to you.

I'm not sure there are enough Canadian members to make a Canadian seed exchange worthwhile. However, I'm not against creating a thread in the Canada Region for a Canadian seed exchange.sanderson wrote:KJ and TD, Sure. A Canadian seed exchange is up to you.
Personally, I'm in a "Canada - Seed Exchange - échange de graines" Facebook Group that has 736 members.
