cage with trelis
I want to build a cage for my garden but I'm failing to see how I can also have a trelis along with a cage. It seems like critters will still have access to the garden through the back because the cage won't be able to cover the back with the trelis supporting vine plants along the back. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Re: cage with trelis
On one of my 4x4 beds I have a chicken wire cage that covers four sides and top of three rows together. The fourth row is the one with the trellis. I have surrounded that row with plastic hardware cloth but it is open at the top to allow the plants to climb the trellis. In that same row I sometimes make small cages but just big enough to cover the seeds/seedlings until they are established and then the micro-cages are removed. Sometimes I just put a piece of hardware cloth on top of the MM to prevent critters from digging up freshly sown seeds.
BTW squirrels and chipmunks seem to be the worst critters in my garden.

I'll try but it's not easy to get a photo that shows it well. I posted one on another thread not too long ago. I'll see what I can do.sanderson wrote:TD, a couple of photos?

This is the best I can do for photos.
Here is a side view with the trellis row (peas growing in corner squares) on the right surrounded by plastic netting. The netting is bunched up at the corners because there is enough netting to surround the whole 4x4 box if needed. The 3x4 chicken wire (rusted) cage is to the left.
Another view with the edge of the chicken wire cage lifted slightly. Looks like I need to get busy weeding this bed.
This view is from behind the trellis. You can see the bunched up plastic netting at the corners. As well, the position of the cage over three rows should be visible. Sometimes I put a piece of wood across the MM at the edge of the third row to stop critters from getting underneath the cage along that area.
