New England March 2017

Yeah, I had to scrap my errands for today. It was supposed to be rain since it's over 35 degrees out there, which is why I planted peas and spinach yesterday. But so far only wind blown snow.
Blech!

(My computer just started to act up, lost a post that was just about done. Major bummer.)
We still have over a foot of snow on the ground, and it is above freezing. But, the term "raw" applies. It is spitting snow. The birds and the squirrels are having their way with the feeders and it is very enjoyable to watch. I am not going anywhere other than to the barn for some "Pre" spring cleaning organization. It is nice to be putting snow removal tools back in order so that when it is time to put them away they have been inspected and anything that needs oil, sharpening, repainted, or bent back into shape, etc. is done and I can just put them away and bring out the summer stuff! The ground is frozen solid except where the snow has been cleared away, and then it is frozen about 3"-4" down. We haven't had much sun lately, but that will probably soon change and I can "work" the soil, I am thinking spring.

Nice, CC!  I too am hoping to get some tomatoes in this weekend, and ground cherries.  Might check out the beds, if I can, I will stick in sugar snap peas and radishes...hopefully it won't be frozen.

Let's see...(bottom to top) Butt Crunch, Little Ceasar, Grand Rapids, Lolla Rosa, Marvel of the 4 Seasons, Rouge d' Hiver and Red Velvet.  The Grand Rapids and the Butt Crunch are 5 yr old seeds which is why they are sparce.  I'm glad to get ANYthing from them.

The red kale is Baltic Red, a new comer for me.

You have a lot of good looking seedlings just waiting to go outside when the weather permits.

Nice!  Baltic Red...frickin beautiful!  Let me know..I am not a kale fan, and in fact said I would not grow it...it is just soooo good for us, and I love every other plant related to it...cruciferous veggies....

Sunny right now and cold & windy, but it's supposed to get cloudy this afternoon, rain tomorrow and then a nice stretch of weather after that. I've got it in my mind that I want to plant something out in the garden today. I haven't even hardened any starts off yet so I put these babies out this morning to see if I can get them prepared -  Kale, collards, lettuces. They were watered with half strength Neptune yesterday  to feed them but it should also ease any transplant shock. Their twin packs are still inside to grow a little bigger and be planted out later if this doesn't work.  

I think I'll also plant some onion sets and maybe some onion seedlings. And probably the potatoes that are sprouting under my kitchen counter.

Once it clouded over I really felt like I needed to get my hands dirty. These poor little baby kales and collards are probably cursing the day I was born.

CapeC....Thanks for the visuals.  Love seeing how the new babies are doing.
Just cover over the new outdoor plants just before the sun goes down to trap a little heat undercover.  Maybe they'll do just fine.

Nice!  I put my leaves outside in the overcast day yesterday for not even an hour and they looked like they were being sunscalded....grrr...

Went home at lunch today and plopped the windows over the 2 planted boxes as it was snowing. Now it's raining but I think over the next 24 hrs it may go back and forth. Better safe than sorry.
