Carrot Week 2017! - Page 6 Empty Re: Carrot Week 2017!

Post  Fiz 6/7/2017, 7:39 pm

I'm starting to see some orange color forming on the carrots I planted back at the end of February indoors, which had been moved outside a few weeks ago. I know they aren't part of carrot week but I'm excited, haha. I'm so tempted to dig around for a little peek! They're planted in a container with a tomato plant so it's a bit too leafy to get in there to get a good look.

Two of my tiny mini carrots out of 16 that were planted during carrot week have been unearthed! Hand placement for size comparison. They're finger sized, haha. Ignore the two puny ones on the right, those were older leftover Romeo baby carrots that were in a container. Dug them out because they aren't getting any younger, lol.

Carrot Week 2017! - Page 6 Empty Kuroda Carrots

Post  countrynaturals 9/6/2017, 8:57 pm

I found Kuroda carrot seeds at Burpee's. The description says, "comical orange main crop carrot known for its enormous yields and tender, sweet roots." I couldn't resist. Rolling Eyes I just planted the seeds, today. Has anyone else ever tried these? Results? geek

I looked up images and they look normal to me. I think it was a typo in the description and it was supposed to be "conical." Rolling Eyes

Because of the weather, my severe back pain and subsequent surgery, etc., I never got around to planting carrots this year.

However, there was one survivor that was planted early last fall.  Just prior to my hospitalization, it was several inches tall but had very little root development.

When I returned home three weeks later, the darned thing was 5' tall and in full bloom!
I pulled it subsequently and found a small, woody carrot attached to that long, long stem.

Pulled some carrots today. There are actually carrots! But they are a bit stubby. The Parisian are on the left - the larger one was in a window box instead of in 8" of MM, the Red Cored Chantenay are on the right. I know Parisian is a ball type carrot, but I was still expecting more carrot out of the RCs. How do I get longer carrots?

YIKES! I planted a whole bunch of Parisian carrots but now I'm sorry. Those puppies are not worth the space and water. Evil or Very Mad I like my carrots "short & sweet" and that's actually the name of one variety I planted.  Razz I like the looks of those Red cored Chantenay. I will check and see if I have any of those. I'm planting a different variety every week until November. It's soooo nice to be able to snack on a homegrown carrot while doing my gardening, and the ones I planted last year survived the summer and produced all year long. I love you

I only grew Parisian one time. Not worth it for me. I'm having better success with more dainty carrots. I just don't have a good orange thumb.

This is my third year trying carrots. I'm not entirely sure what all I'm doing differently, but I've made a lot of progress since the first year I just got string roots, and the second I mostly got miniature (too small to eat) carrots except for the ones I accidentally overwintered. Stubby carrots is progress, longer carrots would be nice. I should probably check some of the other types I planted, to see if they fared any better.

It's disappointing to see that wide carrot top and find so little underneath. I don't think I'll buy another packet of Parisian seeds, but I might finish this one out just because they did better in the window box than many things have/would.

Carrots seem to be fickle in my garden. Some years are better than others. This year is the best yet. It's really weird. I have yet to figure out what the differences are, except the compost is probably different year to year.

Wish I could grow beets like this years carrots... No

I know what you mean about needing to figure out what's making a difference, CC. How can we change things for the better if I don't know what went right/wrong?

I harvested a few of the Scarlet Nantes, and a Parisian last night, sliced and steamed 'em. Both kinds tasted the same to me, but both were more 'carroty' than average store carrots, and more tender.

I dug my carrot bed yesterday. 24 squares planted in Bolero, and Purple 68.  I did not know that I was running a taste test for mice, but now that I do know I can report the results.  Mice prefer Bolero, a sweet orange carrot over the firmer earthier taste of Purple 68.  The little buggers have been eating the carrots from the tops down leaving me an orange stub about 3 inches below the surface. Rolling Eyes
I still got a fridge crisper drawer full of purple carrots, and a small handful of orange carrots.

This thread was fun reading while sipping my morning coffee. Kudos to all who participated.
