Official planting week: April 15th thru the 22nd!

Disclaimer: we will accept carrots planted on any other dates in the year 2017 (just like we always do). So be sure and share all your carrots with us! tongue

I decided to wait until after surgery because I see mid & hi 40's coming up in my forecast. Maybe I can plant them on the 22nd. I won't stress it tho.

Step 2: Build High-Rise boxes...umm, what's a High-Rise box look like? Anyone care to share a picture of their High-Rise box? I think I know what I will do, but I'd like to see what others have done first.

Step 3: Plant seeds

Step 4-74: Water and Wait

Being an ole fashoned square footer all my raised beds are 12 inches deep.  The cardboard and news paper bottoms have long degraded so no need for hats.  While yall are all planting I harvested our lil 2x6 winter patch of carrots.  I forgot to take pictures but Peggy caught me on the way to the deep freeze with this winters haul.Carrot Week 2017! - Page 3 Dsc01910

Thanks Rooster and TD. Those are very nice top hat boxes. I opted to use some scrap plywood I had. I have two 1/2 squares that I tested on...I need to refine my corners but for now, I think it will work.

Good video, Ralitaco. It made it seem so easy. I'm going to try planting them like that and sewing them every two weeks and see how it goes.

I thought it was neat that you can store carrots in damp sand...learned something new. Of course, I do not plant enough to need to store them but it is good to know.

I used just one top hat last year.  However, I also grew a shorter variety of carrot in other squares without a top hat. I'm planning to have at least two top hats this year but I'll most likely make them out of a better, rot resistant wood.

My carrot bed's walls are collapsing.  Do I drive a couple stakes to hold it all togther yet one more year.... or make a new frame.  I thought I dug out all the creeping grass last fall.  I dunno when I will get these carrots planted, but it is time to get it done soon!

Have you got anything growing in it, yet? If not, I'd make a new frame. If I already had anything growing it it, I'd opt for nursing it along one more season.

Several of our beds are 16 years old or aproaching it.  The boxes are beginning to degrade and we have already replaced our box we grow garlic in last year and Peggy's original hero barden the year before that.  We did what kate said when the box was empty we dug a round the inside down to ground level took out the old frame and put in a new one both times we went from 4x4 to 4x6.  Very soon or 4x12 veggie box will need replacing and we may go 4x16 or add another 4x8 at the end when we do it.

I agree that I should, but would i want to keep it this size?  Is it time to do some major bed moving and rebuilding?  It is getting to that time.  But that is a fall project.
So I pounded a couple stakes in to hold the sides up, got the winter growth of mint and grass out, planted the whole 3'x8' bed in carrots, and then applied scanmask nematodes.

That felt really good.  Was the first real day spent gardening.

My Carrot Week started late last Aug and early last Sept.  Here is the carrot I harvested today.  Very big.  I find the smaller carrots are much sweeter so next year I will harvest earlier.
Carrot Week 2017! - Page 3 Img_2210
I still have almost  4 squares of carrots remaining to harvest.  These 4 squares were never thinned but I am getting some large carrots without the thinning.

I harvested this one so my grandson could take it to school for lunch.  But I saw him later in the day munching down on that carrot.  It definitely will not be for his school lunch.

Tender Sweet is my fave...Sugar Snax is next.  I did a Kaleidoscope version last yeawill not repeat.  Pretty, but really not so great, tough, and not sweet.

I love garden carrots.  Carrot Week 2017! - Page 3 370856013

Mine are just little sprouts that went into the bed late March and just started coming up a couple of weeks ago.

Carrot Week 2017! - Page 3 Carrot10

I've just been growing some of the shorter kinds - Scarlet Nantes, Danver's Half-long, and Short N Sweet. These do really well in un-altered square foot beds.  The Scarlets I grew last year were especially nice. They're smaller, of course, but have a pleasing shape, and were the first really good-tasting carrot I've ever eaten. (I've eaten carrots most of my adult life, but I've never liked them much. I've just forced myself to eat them because I know they're good for me.) The Short N Sweet are also delicious, but I call them "Fat N Ugly" because they came out of my garden in very pudgy, malformed shapes.
