Still trying to grow melon. I think my hot season is too short. But I recently planted some cantaloupe seeds that have sprouted just in case I get lucky this year.

1. Kale

You could steam them in the microwave. Wet them, stick them in a glass bowl, dig a hole in the center so they cook evenly, cover, hit it on hi for a minute, let them sit in there and rest for another minute, test to make sure they are done to your liking, chop, freeze on a cookie sheet/parchment thingy, bag. Easy peasy. If you like soggy veggies, as does my mother, hit it for 2 or 3 minutes.

OK, I researched this and feel confident in advising:  Melons in the South Annex

I grew Minnesota Midgets (muskmelons ) last year.  South side of my brick house in a large container.  They were amazing, fast and vigorous , small, personal sized melons. Got 8 or so.

Sakatas Sweets:  Honeydew type, you can and should eat rind and all; just super sweet and prolific!  Probably got 12-14.  Softball size

Black tail Mountain watermelons:  Lots of seeds, but nice fruits, got 4 or 5 total, and really super sweet!

I have seeds if you want to PMme!

Thanks, SR...good to know. My zombie garden was on the south side and right now it's empty. I'll transplant some of those sprouts into it. They have 1st true leaves now so it's time.

May take you up on the seeds next year. Too late to start here now I think.

SR ... You sent me Pinetree Sakata's Sweet Melon which are small seeds and some other much larger seeds. Do you know what the large seeds are?  I've got one plant from those large seeds in my megatrellis U-bed and it is doing very well. I've also got a plant from the Sakata's Sweet small seeds growing in one of my 4x4 beds. It's still a small plant but seems to be quite healthy. I tried to get some more Sakata's Sweet started but failed ... either did not germinate because of the cool wet weather or a critter got them. But I'd like to know what kind of melon to expect from the larger seeds.  Very Happy

I'm still struggling with melons, too. Baker Creek says Black tail Mountain watermelon will do well in heat and drought, so you'll be hearing from me. Thanks, scorpio. What won't you grow next year or are still trying to grow?? - Page 4 3170584802

Yes, my watermelons are both setting fruit!  Others are flowering their little green butts off!

I have also a cross that I can send some seeds

SR, raw kale salad!  Clean it, tear into pieces then add olive oil and garlic to taste.  Massage it 2-3 mins; add salt, pepper and fresh Parmesan cheese.  That is our favorite way to eat kale; although I do blanch and freeze it for soups in the winter.
