Blue Screen!
Hi, guys... potential BIG issue that you need to know about.
I'm running Firefox 3.6.3 on Windows XP...the computer's not new, but it's not a dinosaur, either...and every time I open more than 2 windows on the SFG forum, it blue-screens and does a completely physical memory dump. (I've been logging what I was doing when it blue-screens, and it's always SFG.)
I participate in a couple of other forums, and multiple windows have never been a problem for my setup -- I regularly have 8-10 windows open -- either all within a single forum, or a variety of windows of things I'm working on (multitasking is both my biggest strength and most blatant weakness.)
I'm getting around it by limiting SFG windows, but there's a memory leak somewhere, and it shouldn't be happening...and it may well be related to the various other forum issues of late.

Well, that really stinks... sorry to hear about your trouble. I am not sure how often Alan (the SFGF computer whiz) checks the message board, so you may want to send him a PM or an email (alan@squarefootgardening.com) I hope this helps them to resolve ALL the issues that have been cropping up (pun intended).

Re: Blue Screen!
Hmmm. LaFee, there's nothing more apt to give me a heart attack than the dreaded Blue Screen!
I always have many windows open as you do. I haven't experienced the curse. I sure hope I don't. I'm on a Dell w/IE maybe four or five years old. I do see the irradic displays when I post many times. Gets annoying. Hard to read.
Did you PM Squarefoot (Alan)? You should.

Re: Blue Screen!
I run Firefox on XP also, have had numerous windows open but no BSOD. The main SFG website does slow me down a lot on my older laptop (all that Flash ) but the forum has been fine.
Re: Blue Screen!
I suggest monitoring the 'processes' tab in Windows Task Manager'. What you'll see is that Firefox does not relinquish memory completely when tabs are closed-regardless of the site visited. That's not a forum issue.
Re: Blue Screen!
Even after a reboot...when I have nothing else running, I still get BSOD when I'm on SFG with more than three windows open at a time.
It happened three times before I made the post...and I was logging what I had open when it was crashing...and it's only ever SFG.
Like I said...it doesn't happen on any other forum, regardless of how many windows I have open...it doesn't happen when I've got multiple windows on unrelated sites open, either.
I'm not trying to point fingers or blame anyone -- I don't think anyone's a bad person...but the only common activity to all of my crashes is multiple windows in the SFG forum...which indicates that something isn't running according to Hoyle somewhere. It might not be anything that anyone at SFG is doing or not doing....I'm just trying to alert someone that there's a memory leak that causes some pretty hardcore issues.
There are currently enough compatibility issues with the forum software that you've posted it to the creeper at the top of the screen....I'm offering this up as a related symptom, and am thinking that it's quite likely that one will get fixed right along with the other somewhere along the line.

Re: Blue Screen!
You could be right. It's been almost a week now, and there are some forum admins out there starting to get upset about the funnies that have been going on.
The software developers and code techies are in France. There was talk on the support forum last Friday that due to French law the support team wouldn't be working over the weekend. That didn't go over so well with admins here in the States. Maybe you could look them up and give them a goose!

Re: Blue Screen!
Yep...today is Ascension, so the country is basically closed today.
And because it's a Thursday, it wouldn't make any sense at all to work on Friday when there's a weekend, so we faire la pont -- make a bridge -- and take Friday as a vacation day, so voila, we have a 4-day weekend.
Everything -- government offices, schools, many shops and stores -- is closed today because yes, it's a legal holiday.
But don't let anybody kid you...Friday and the weekend are NOT holidays...and working on Friday or the weekend doesn't even run afoul of the35-hour workweek...we have a very dear French friend who will be working Saturday...and he's a techie (but no, he doesn't work for a forum company!)

Re: Blue Screen!
Just to sew up this topic...I took a deep breath and opened a half-dozen windows...whatever they did to the software over here seems to have worked, because my computer never even flinched at having multiple windows open.
Whatever was causing the problem *appears* to have been fixed. Hope so!
