Years ago, when I would start tomato seeds in those little plastic "greenhouses", I always had problems with damping off, until someone told me, "Oh no, as soon as you see the seeds have sprouted, you need to take the cover off!" So I did that with my pepper sprouts. Now, every few days, I put some water on a flat plate, put the repurposed strawberry container, in which I poked holes in the bottom, into the water and let it soak up whatever it wants. And today, I was checking on the little guys and what do I see??? Are they doomed? Should I take the ones that aren't near the damped off areas and put them in little starter pots? Or am I getting all worked up over nothing? The area I'm talking about is in the lower left hand corner.

Not doomed, but keep the lid off, maybe use a small electric fan on low. When the pepper seedlings are so young, I too usually water from the bottom and a light mist on top, every few days.

Do not transplant until you have first true leaves.

Thanks for that, camprn! Maybe I'll put them out on the porch today, where they can get some breeze.

Hammock, I get that at some point every year. I need to remember a fan while they are indoors. Thanks, Camp.

There have been some recent posts on using a diluted oxygen peroxide solution to help prevent dampening off...or google it.

I went through those posts, very interesting. Seems like it's kind of controversial. It would be worth a control test next spring when I'm starting seeds. Thanks for the info.

Sanderson, in the posts that I was reading on peroxide, there was one by toddvol, related specifically to cukes. Just in case you're interested.

"I started my 1st SFG a week or so ago and after a few days immediately lost four cucumber transplants. Before reading the forum, I went a bought four more replacements and planted them. They too started to look sick.

So I searched the forum and learned that cucumber transplants do poorly compared to seeds. I also found the information on Hydrogen Peroxide mixed with water. I immediately mixed up 1/2 cup of 3% H2O2 with a gallon on water. I'm impressed! I've watered twice in that last four days with the mix and the cucumbers look extremely healthy now! Last cucumbers would have done been dead by now."

The cuke was in a shady corner of the box and was just too cold. After 3 years, I'm pretty comfortable transplanting everything but root veggies. Just have to be very careful with the roots and cucumbers seem to be one of the more fragile ones. Thanks for the post.

I put my 3 cukes in 6" peat pots, hope that softens the transplant blow! Bummer about damping off....
