FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
Note: The question proposed for the April Drawing just wasn't a good fit for this Forum. I requested that the question be changed to something more applicable for us. Amie graciously modified the flyer today, and here we are. Jimmy Cee is to be credited with the original idea. Thanks, Jimmy, even though you didn't know you had provided me with the idea from your thread- https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t20288-one-item-you-love-the-most-about-s-f-g For those that replied to Jimmy's thread, you can repeat the same answer here.
It's time for another Drawing. Participation starts over right now and ends April 23, Midnight Pacific Time. The prize will be this Seeding Square from the SFG Foundation Store!

Planting SFG
Planting in SFG has taught me a lot about plant spacing and how it affects the yield of the harvest.
If done correctly you can harvest large amounts of produce, as well as, numerous different kinds of crop, in such a small area.
SFG gives you the best chance to succeed as a small backyard "farmer"!

SFG spacing is sooo efficient! Great for my tiny back yard.
Re: FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
I had zero gardening experience prior to encountering square foot gardening method 5 seasons ago - I have had a lot of success and credit Mel and his square foot "madness"

Productivity, efficiency, nice to look at, easy compared to row gardening gets me started. Plus, this wonderful group of people who are doing SFG and a variety of variances on same.....I love it! Flexible, too!

Planting by square foot is much more efficient than row gardening. One example being you can easily fit 12 carrots in just one square foot by spacing them in rows 1 inch apart.

When you follow proper plant spacing, veggies thrive and weeds don't have a chance...gardening becomes all about seeding, planting, growing, harvesting, and eating...less about work and weeding.

I have limited space and less than perfect health. SFG allows me to make the most of my space and eliminates back breaking work dealing with Georgia red clay. I'm beginning my fourth spring, and I'm never looking back!

Re: FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
it is so diverse because you can make as many or as few SF as you want. So you can make a whole garden of one thing, or you can make a whole hodge podge (does this exist outside of Nova Scotia?) in one or you can just try a little of something you have never done before, you can extend your season a little aaannd the list goes on.

SFG planting teaches me very simple math. I need that at my age.

The Mel's Mix is the first thing. I don't have to worry about pH, nutrients, ease of planting, etc. The second is the grid which makes it so easy to seed and plant.
What I love about SFG
- The prospect of teaching others, especially kids, about the food supply, about efficiency and conservation, and...
- Raising an overabundance of goodies that I can share and tell others about SFG and...
- THIS Forum!

Just a reminder to those who haven't been on the Forum for a few days. The question to the drawing has been changed to "What do you love about SFG?" The early respondents answered a different question regarding spacing. Sanderson
Re: FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
What I love the most is that after you take the initial time to create your Mel's Mix, everything else is peaceful, restful, pleasurable, easy and PRODUCTIVE!
Re: FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
It's easy and I don't need to till or in my case dig dirt up by hand. I can landscape the garden as part of my yard too!

So "What do I Love Most about SFG?"...well they say a picture is worth a thousand words...
This may not be a 1000 words, but...
TABLETOP BEDS!!!
I love being able to raise the garden up off the ground, not only for me, but for my 75 year old mother. The excitement and pleasure she had/has with being able to take care of her "baby squash" is priceless.

Up until I started SFG, I couldn't keep a houseplant alive and now I grow my own vegetables. It's foolproof:)

Once you set up your garden, SFG takes all the guess work out of gardening. The biggest concern after that is what to plant and when, then just add water (daily!).

Re: FORUM DRAWING - APRIL 2016 - Do Over! April 15-23
For me, one of the best parts is being able to work in the beds myself. Other than the initial building of the beds by my DH, I do most of the work, since it's really my passion. I can plan, plant, harvest and enjoy this without all the hard work of digging into the earth. We have a lot of clay here and don't think we would have a garden without this method. Being able to plant so many different things in a small space has given me even more motivation to try new foods and plant new things! Also, this forum and the advice people give is priceless! I've learned so much from everyone just by searching topics. This type of gardening is great for people of all ages / health levels and experience levels!

I agree with just about everything others have already shared.
For me, SFG takes all the guess-work out of gardening. And it has given me the opportunity to share the joy of growing vegetables with my children.
