How deep to plant potato onions
Hi Y'all, I'm back for my annual check in. I received my potato onions from Fedco Seeds today & need to know how deep to plant them. Last year I evidently planted them too deep as they were growing like bonkers & suddenly ALL of them up & died. Any help is appreciated.
Re: How deep to plant potato onions
Didn't they come with planting instructions?

Instructions were for generalized onion culture, nothing specific for potato onions.

Hi Dixie! Great to see you back again!
I think I planted mine the past year like you do regular onions, a bit of the point breaking thru. The year before I buried them completely. They popped up like shallots either way. Not sure I'll be planting them this year. Both harvests were the same - small onions but plentiful.
Wonder why you lost yours. Did you have a lot of rain last year and they rotted?

I buried them completely & we did have plenty of rain. I'll not plant them as deep this year.

Oh,that's so sad. Pfft.dixie wrote:Instructions were for generalized onion culture, nothing specific for potato onions.
I would plant the bulb like a shallot, halfway in only.
