Holy Cow! I thought my 3 squares was good, but 10! How do we know when to pull them? I have a few tops that have flopped over but I don't know why.

clb58- Potato Onions are onions that multiply underground. In my photo you can see the different stalks coming out of the ground. I only planted 1 onion back in October but will get 5 maybe.

Mine are doing great...I have 11 squares I think...8 in one box and 3 in another.
It is too late for a photo opportunity tonight, maybe I can get one tomorrow.

Re: How are your potato onions?
I was going to post a question about these. I have only one square but they are doing wonderful too. They have little knobby things on top. I will have to have a photo shoot tomorrow if I don't have to stay too late after work. Dang! This being in charge thing kinda sucks sometimes. I wouldn't mind it if the weather was lousy but it has been so nice the past couple of days so we are crazy busy.
What I am not sure about is what I am supposed to do with them. Will they form a large bulb underneath like regular onions? Or am I supposed to just cut bits off them kind of like you do chives? I haven't the foggiest. Never grown them before.

OH, "knobby things on top" sounds like egyptian walking onions, not potato onions? My potato onions don't have knobby things on top but my walking onions do. Walking onions are great eaten like green onions. The potato onions are supposed to be pulled for us I am guessing late July? And dried and used like any old yelllow cooking onion.

I'm going to have to get some potato onions. I'm not sure if I have room for the Egyptian walking onion though.

Re: How are your potato onions?
I'd like to try the potato onions. Where do you get them from? Seed catalogs? I asked at the Farm store, they did not know/carry them.
I have the Egyptian walking onions. I haven't tried putting them in mm yet. they will take all the room that you give them! I have them in flower bed, near the house. If they escape into the yard, they will be mowed.

Here is the bed I have most of my potato onions in, they are alternated every other square with garlic.
Here are a couple of close ups of squares with just potato onions. Mine are not as far along as boffer's.
