My Shreveport Garden 2016
This is bed number 1 I planted this weekend.
4 kinds of lettuce, Chard, Turnips and Carrots.
This bed is on its second year. Still looks pretty good.

Nicely done. It all looks neat and tidy. Do you have a grid to go on top?

Nice! Is that 4x4?
Also, what kind of carrots are you using, and how many can you get into a square foot?

Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
I have three of these 4 x 4 beds and three 4 x 8 beds. I have yet to find a cheap sturdy long lasting material for a grid that I am happy with. I made a watering grid out of pvc for one of my 4 x 4 beds and I use that to plant by.trolleydriver wrote:Nicely done. It all looks neat and tidy. Do you have a grid to go on top?

I used 1/2 schedule 40 PVC pipe for the grid. I used the 4 way PVC cross for intersections-schedule 40 cross tee. I closed the end with 1/2 cap to keeps bugs out. They have lasted years. I will also put it down in the garden beds to keeps the cats from using my garden beds as a toilet.

SR ... For my grids I used strips from metal Venetian blinds that we no longer needed. I drilled holes at the crossing points and used small nuts/bolts to hold them together. I simply bent the ends over the outside of the box to hold them in place. On my next SFG bed I may make the bends at the inside edge of the box rather than on the outside. The grids are a bit flimsy but held up very well during the first year. It will be interesting to see how well they did over the winter.

That is what have for one 4 x 4 bed and it is sturdy but not cheap enough for me LOL. I think by the time I bought all the crosses and endcaps and pvc it was about $20.00 I would have to do that 8 more times for all my beds. $160.00 total. Too rich for me. I am thinking clothesline now but not sure how to anchor it and keep it tight and presentable all at the same time.

Grids
How about clothesline string tied to springs. The springs could then be hooked to eye hooks screwed into the sides of the box? Easy to remove and you can replace the string as needed!

Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
All my boxes, except two, have removable wood grids made from super cheap wood trimming for screen doors. The 2 newest ones have cotton string hooked around loose screws on the top edges of the boxes, serpentine style. The string was just supposed to be temporary until husband could make some grids, but 16 months later the string is still there. As a CI, I'm only supposed to support grids, but realistically, folks come up with different designs.
Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
Kathy....I tried clothesline but it got very loose. I didn't try it with springs, tho, so maybe that would make a difference.

Nice job
Looking good Katjohn83. Your soil looks very rich. I'm jealous you can plant outdoors!

Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
Here is an update. Bed number 1 going slow but everything is growing.
I put back in my pvc grid on this one.

Bed number two I planted with Brassicas last week. Cut worms made quick work of the smaller ones. so sluggo plus to the rescue.

I apologize for the orientation. Not sure how to rotate them.

Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
Very pretty, John! I have never actually grown brassicas, will try kale this year. I love to eat them. Is homegrown broccoli for example "heads and shoulders" above store-bought taste wise?

Re: My Shreveport Garden 2016
This winter was my first experience with broccoli. Tender and sweet, the flowers are especially delicious.
