Re: 2016 Garden Pictures
Well, my gardening pictures aren't as impressive. Just put first seeds in the ground coupe weeks ago. Have some stuff sprouting. Plan to get Tomatoes and peppers transplants this coming weekend.
Beans Sprouting:
2nd year Strawberries coming along:
A varmint got into a square of my beans. I think it's a squirrel, got in and dug around. Possibly cat sticking paw in and digging, but I think it's a squirrel because I had similar diggings into my straw cover of strawberries over the winter.
Compost is still "cooking" after one flip. I don't cover the pile spring-summer and we've had a lot of rain recently, so pile is probably saturated and will need another turn as soon as this rain stops. We needed rain though, was a little dry.
Not exactly garden related, but my daughter and I built Mom a new rabbit hutch for Mother's Day. My daughter is painting grass along the bottom as final touch. I still have some work to do on the rabbit house it goes in, next weekend I hope. Anyway, mama liked it. I do use the rabbit poo in the garden, so kind of garden related.

Nice pics! Love the strawberry cover.
Yes, rabbit poo IS garden related in my book. I hear you can use it immediately without having to compost it first.

Re: 2016 Garden Pictures
40 years ago I made our Belgian hare's massive wooden cage . The floor was 1/4 inch stainless steel rods spot welded at the ends with two round bar spot welded cross members to stop them opening up all put in a a stainless frame . The gaps between the bars was exactly 1/2". This slide in slide out floor sat above a 2 " deep stainless steel pee & poop tray which was also a slide in slide out event. His resting quarters had a slide over wooden floor so he always had some where solid to lay flat out ( on straw)CapeCoddess wrote:Nice pics! Love the strawberry cover.

The pellets of poop fell through , his pee ran into the tray as well . Every morning I was home I'd be up at 06.00 or so , slide out the tray , drain the pee into a big mouthed barrel and roll the pellets into a lidded drum if they weren't being put on the garden right away , then go for a shower &b breakfast .
Come the end of the week I'd dilute the pee about 20 to 1 and use it as a liquid manure out the watering can rose ( avoiding all veg that eaten raw for obvious health reasons ) or if there was no need of it I'd pour it neat onto the six foot by four foot x 3 foot high compost bin's contents .
Cleaning it out was a doddle , get him out on his harness & lead with my four & a half year old in charge .( garden was made fully enclosed , rabbit friendly & dog resistant ) . Then I was able to freely power wash off the floor frame & muck tray , give it a quick spray of diluted bleach to sterilize it then power wash it off after a few minutes , then stand it to dry a little before reassembling it and putting him back in ...... unless we had rabbit races .....between him and our kiddie .

Is Reotemp a good compost thermometer?
I may be in the market for a decent one...the cheapy that came with my compost bin through the counts just shot craps this year.

Re: 2016 Garden Pictures
So far so good. I think I got that one for Christmas, so fairly new. I guess we'll see, I don't baby it, it's been outside since Christmas, buried in snow, still "ticking". I like the range labels on the dial "steady-active-hot", nice quick reference.landarch wrote:Is Reotemp a good compost thermometer?

Kathy, very nice arrangement and haul!
Zmoore, how many strawberries/SF did you put in the first year? Looks great. I want a berry bed 4x4.
