TD take care dieting ...fads come & go yet folk still get fat & fatter . Most dieters quit their diet within a few weeks of starting  .

It's considered better to alter your eating regime instead .

Think of your self as  the axle on a cart wheel . Eat a few spokes of each food group but only eat a little of them .

The weight will come off you quickly , I'm finding that I don't get the crazy urges to binge on what has been reduced ( unlike you do when you leave out a food group , your bank balance will grow in sisz & the bad cholesterol will drop along with blood sugars that are too high .

It's not so much as what you put in your mouth but the amount that you put in & swallow ... It's the same with drink .

I agree with Plantoid. There's no such thing as a free ride when it comes to healthy eating, and eliminating one whole food group just causes more cravings, in me anyway. There are lots of good videos out there on healthy eating and how to do it. I just watch this one yesterday:

I didn't say to eliminate all carbs, just to minimize the starchier ones.

Some of us do have carbohydrate intolerance.  I've been on a low-sugar diet since 1980, with occasional (generally holiday) exceptions, with a bit of ice cream every two or three months and a dessert on the rare occasions I dine out.

Amounts are important, of course, but I've never been able to lose weight if I eat much starch at all.

CC ... after watching that on YouTube I went to Netflix and watched the entire video which is about 90 minutes in length.  Very interesting and emphasizes my concern about carbs especially those derived from processed foods (e.g., white flour) and sugar (including corn starch in products).

funny post

As for the diet thing, I did Adkins 15 years ago, 2 weeks before going to the beach.  I was a miserable, ketotic mess, lost 17#s, and gained it all back in the following 2 weeks!

Moderation in all. Easier said than done!  I love carbs....they are delicious which is exactly why I eat too much of them!

1. I'm now down 8 pounds by reducing carb and sugar intake from white bread, pastries, cookies, potato chips, store bought fruit juice, etc. I am not doing the strict high fat side of the equation but I do eat eggs, bacon, butter, etc. in moderation.
2. According to the standard BMI (Body Mass Index) I am still overweight.
3. However, there is new thinking on BMI as it applies to seniors (over 65). It turns out that according to this new approach I am in the sweet spot.

TD,

You're inspiring me to go back on a better diet.

I'll need to eat even fewer carbs, drink less wine, and exercise regularly.  However, I still plan to allow myself an occasional restaurant meal, say every month or two.

Trolleydriver,

Those two articles are really interesting.

Last year I decided that it was time to lose the weight I'd accumulated over the years. So I bought a Fitbit, and started to pay attention to what I was eating.  Every day, I enter what I eat into the Fitbit app and make sure my calories burned exceed my calories eaten. (No special diet or exercise plan)  I found that just by paying attention, I naturally stopped eating things that drove the empty-calorie count up.  I've lost 49 lbs and I'm within 15 lbs of my final goal.

The BMI calculator you posted indicates that I'm already in the acceptable range for my age and height. Very Happy   I LIKE that!  Thanks for posting it.

Good luck with your diet.

WoW! Congrats to you! That is incredible. Keep up it up!
I'm in my second week as a Fitbit owner and I love it. I know the device itself wont make me lose weight, but it gives me the motivation to keep moving. I also log all that I eat into the app and really appreciate how it adjusts to your level of activity and calories in and out. I know it's not exact and that this isn't rocket science, but it's the motivation I need...and I'll take it. I also use S-Health and Wahoo Fitness.
@GloriaG (or anyone else with a Fitbit) you can hit me up via pm if you'd like contact info and a Fitbit friend add.

Post  trolleydriver 3/2/2017, 8:10 am

Sugar is the main problem with the North American diet. Counting calories in-out is not the solution if the diet is loaded with sugar in all of its many forms, including the dreaded high fructose corn syrup. The food industry played a game by reducing the fat content (to make it sound healthy) in their processed foods and then adding sugar to improve the taste which also makes us want to come back for more. The sugar causes an increase in our insulin threshold as well as fatty liver and fat storage. No wonder there is a Type 2 Diabetes epidemic. We need to eat more green leafy veggies and more veggies and fruits in general. Reduce the intake of highly refined products (e.g., white flour, white sugar), reduce the intake of processed foods which contain various forms of sugar and multiple chemicals (read the labels), stay away from hydrogenated oils and trans fats and avoid the fast food outlets. Add in some exercise.

One more thing ... just because the product says it is diet or contains no sugar does not mean it is good for you. Most of the artificial sweeteners are bad and trigger our bodies into wanting more sugar. That is how the soda companies keep people coming back for more.

End of rant.

Thanks Sanderson, I appreciate all the support I can get.

Rooster, I hope you find using the Fitbit as helpful as I have. To me it represents a life-style change not a diet - so it's sustainable. Good luck with it.

Trolleydriver - I agree that refined sugar is a huge problem.  My personal experience is that it's IMPOSSIBLE to stay within my activity level and still eat large amounts of refined sugar.  I haven't cut out sugar completely - I couldn't stick with a diet that cut out one food group.  But I have made better choices in order to stay in the calorie range I wanted.  It's worked for me.  Everyone's different - good luck finding your own best solution.
