Winter Reading, Anyone?

Just picked up Eliot Coleman's Four Season Harvest at the library! Hopefully, as I enter year 2, I can extend my season here!

Anybody else reading?

I'll have to look for that one...

Right now, I'm reading the backs of my seed packets & their websites.  I'm already planning what I want to grow & getting the calendar set for seeding, etc.  (If I don't, I know it won't get done...)

Of course, this means that at SOME point I'm going to have to get the garden cleaned out....  

Sounds like fun, Marie! I signed up for personalized planning reminders on Mother Earth News, I have gotten in my inbox. They have an app, too, I might check that out. Still need the seed packets though, LOL!

I am going to read the All New Square foot Gardening book. I had the old one my mom gave me but can't find. Found it on sale so I picked it up. Then I like to watch youtube videos to see what is working for others. Always looking for new ideas and stuff to grow.

Is this limited to garden reading, only?

sigh....  Yes, Kelejan, actual work!  

It's very sad...  You'd think that since I work from home, it'd be easy for me to just run out for a little while every day or so to do some stuff out there.  But in actuality I'm stuck inside most of the time.  Either I'm teaching or doing admin work for the biz...

BUT Mike (dear hubby!) said that if I'm going to get the stuff to tent the beds, then I have to make sure that I actually garden from now on.  "Okay, honey!"     I guess that means I'll just have to make the time and some of the admin items can wait!!!   

So, I've picked out a bunch of stuff to plant next year.  I'm re-reading the seed packets & info I've picked up on my trips thru the internet.  I'm getting the seeding/planting schedule set up.  Today's supposed to be nice, so I'll MAKE TIME to go play with the weeds & grass...

And do some more reading tonight!

Nope, not from my initial standpoint! I also just started "Saint Odd" by Dean Koonz after reading a whole slew of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels....

I am reading the first of Terry Pratchett & Steven Baxter's "The Long Earth",
"The Long War" and The Long Mars".

Not a bit like the late Terry Pratchett's "Disc World" series but I am getting into it.

Science fiction/fantasy for those who do not know of this British author.

I generally pick out authors who write lots of books so that once I find them in the library, I go through the whole shelf in the library.  One series of ten+ books, the author died and someone else finished his series and took three books to cover his notes and I had to wait two years for the final book. I also enjoyed the new author so I read all of his books as well.  The first ten books were always over a 1,000 pages so I read somewhere that amounted to about one million words.  Or maybe two million.

This is fun.  Ken and I read so much and donate the books to charity when we are done.  So, I had to start making lists each year for the tax files, that morphed into a Master Excel sheet that has 670 books now.  The list helps when we buy books to make sure we haven't read something before! I generally don't like female writers (all that heart pounding, etc. - give me a break!) but some are good.

James Lee Burke - Louisiana area plus a side series in some western state - heavier reading

Elizabeth George - (love the Barbara Havers character) - London - heavier reading

Perri O'Shaughnessy - Lake Tahoe mainly - easy reading
John Standford - Twin cities and south Minnesota - parallel characters - medium reading
Brad Thor -military - easy to med reading

Hmmmmm, interesting list, sanderson. I must be a committed "light" reader. By that, you mean like no real brain-ups required to follow the plot/characters, etc? I have read some Jonathan Kellerman....will have to look!

One of my girlfriends says the JD Robb stuff is good. I have read one Nora Roberts from her. It was about a chick firefighter out west, like the Hotshots....pretty good.

This topic is cool. I read St. Odd and loved it. Right now I'm reading up on aerogardens since I have no sun light for a garden at my apartment. My hubby for Christmas is getting me one. I'm also reading E. Aster Bunnymund out loud to my boys. This book series is where they got the idea for the guardians movie.

Nice, mschaef! I like all the Odd Thomas series by Koonz. Also tend to like Stephen King, but haven't read anything more recent than "Cell", which was really good IMO. James Patterson's "Cross" books are pretty good also, and the other cop that he writes about....very formulaic though, and got tired of them. The early ones were really scary/real life crazy people scary (Along Came a Spider, Kiss the Girls, Jack and Jill, etc) in a cop format. And I love kid lit! And adolescent lit!

I'm glad this was bumped. I forgot Gillian Flynn, who wrote "Gone Girl" that was made into a movie. I enjoyed "The Three" by Sarah Lotz. The sequel "Day Four" was released spring 2015 so I will have to hunt it down. Three children are the sole survivors in separate plane crashes. Kind of sci-fi but very well written. "Red Moon" by Benjamin Percy, well it has the word 'moon' in the title, so I'll let you guess.

I am an avid reader; always have been.  I usually have  a book going on my nook for work or appts; and one at home.  I have kept a list of books I have read since 1975; don't ask me what my then 12 yo self was thinking!  If you aren't familiar with it; Goodreads is website for readers that allows you to make lists, join groups, set challenges,etc.

Does anyone know of a place to get a list of books that just came out or are going to be published in the near future.  I have read so many books that the only way I can be sure I have not read the book is to only try a new book.

Yes, like Herblover said, goodreads site is a great spot, and Amazon has some great lists! Just search for best new novels....you will have tons if choices! Have fun!

Mrs trolleydriver is an avid reader. She goes through books like crazy. In addition to reading paper books, she downloads ebooks from the library and places like Amazon.  She carries a small notebook with her in which she writes the authors and titles of the books she reads. Whenever she is in a book store she takes out the notebook and makes sure she does not buy a book that she has read already. As for me, I'm not much of a reader. I have many books that I have started and never finished. I have a lot of reference books rather than general reading books in my own library.

Husband and I went to Borders with our list of read books and went through all the paper backs from A-Z. I think we have enough new books, and books we missed, for a year. I accidentally went by a kiosk with large expensive books on sale around $10. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies by C. Norman Shealy Md, PhD for $10.98.

I enjoy technical reading, since gardening has become my pastime now I always look for them at Barnes & Noble.
They always seem to offer me good info.

Sanderson, you still have Borders???  They closed all of the Atlanta stores...  Very sad....  I like them better than B&N.

Latest for us is a new Tom Clancy in the Jack (Sr) series.  

And a new Clive Cussler.  Pharoah's something...  It was okay, but certainly not my favorite.

I'm a fan of Clive Cussler and have been for years.  He and I share an uncommon but very British first name!

Next couple weeks will be The Good Seed Catalog from Bakers Creek Heirlooms, and Johnny's Seed Catalog! So different but so fun the both of them!
