Re: Winter Reading, Anyone?
Someone may have mentioned it before in this thread but it's worth mentioning again . The 'Outlander' series is outstanding! I read them all and am currently watching season 2, from the library, of the TV series.

Curling up with a good book
We got our first garden catalog of the season last week from Johnnies Select Seeds. We have been looking through it and both marking items we would like. I'll get an order together and send it off after Christmas. Sadly I no longer have a space to start plants like I did at the farm so those will be local.

Re: Winter Reading, Anyone?
I got myself a set of shelves, lights for Christmas last year. Less than $100 with bulbs. T 8s. Set of 2 (doubles) and have em hanging on dowel rods on the shelving unit...in my basement.
That said, Pinetree and Bakers Creek are just good fodder as well. And Johnny's still hasn't arrived....hmmm

Re: Winter Reading, Anyone?
Made the second leg of our pre-Christmas journey today as we left our daughter's house in Cambridge and arrived at my Mom's place in St.Catharines Ontario. This evening we may go the few miles to Niagara Falls to see the Christmas lights. But this thread is about winter reading so here goes. Here in St.Catharines there is a great discount book store. This is the place where a couple of years ago I bought a copy of Mel's ANSFG book. Once I got into that book I could not put it down and now I have a bunch of SFG squares to enjoy. Today while in that same book store I bought "Lasagna Gardening" by Patricia Lanza. So I have another gardening book to read.

Finishing up "Radiant Angel" by Nelson DeMille. Easy, moves right along. Just finished "Darkness, My Old Friend" by Lisa Unger Who done it) and "Don't Look Back" by Gregg Hurwitz. Group of Americans go on an adventure at a mountain rustic resort in Mexico. Doesn't turn out like they thought.

Re: Winter Reading, Anyone?
I just order "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, 2nd Edition" by Edward C. Smith to read over the winter. Hopefully I will get some good ideas to tweak the garden for next year.

Today I finished reading "Lasagna Gardening" by Patricia Lanza. It was a good read. In addition to descriptions of how to prepare lasagna gardens (e.g., wet newspaper over existing sod then build up layers of peat moss, compost, etc.) its also includes good basic information about different types of vegetables, herbs, berry plants and flowers.

I've been wanting to read both The Dehydrator Bible & Lasagna Gardening... I'll have to stop by the library again. Or put them on my birthday wish list...
I DID finish the new Tom Clancy/Mark Greany book. Made me a little paranoid reading through it.... But - surprise, surprise, all is well in the end... (Of course!) :-)

I'm reading the latest Vince Flynn/new author book, Order to Kill, and it's quite good, so far.
Isn't it odd how so many of us favor this genre of fiction? It must be because Mel's method, being the product of an engineering mind, appeals to those of us who are primarily left-brained and logical.

My mind is an open book, it takes everything in and retains nothing.

That is exactly what I was thinking about myself while I was reading the "Lasagna Gardening" book. Then later today I got into the Baker Creek Whole Seed Catalog and that confirmed it for me.

Jut finished "Tragic" by Robert K. Tanenbaum - death of a union boss and ensuing investigation and court room scenario. Thoroughly enjoyed.

TD, I find that writing down notes on pieces of paper, even in the books themselves helps me a lot in remembering. These forums help also, in offering input from text. You should see my books...nothing but hi lighting, scribbling and what not. But, it really helps me...

I love the "Outlander" books. I used to be in a curling team with a friend who was trying to write her first novel and was in contact with Diane Gabaldon as her mentor. My friend never made a book sale, I'm afraid.
I saw one episode on TV, when the two main characters were forced to marry, but as it was only on our French Channel, i watched it in French. Having read the book, and it being their wedding night, I understand what was happening. If I eventually see it in English, I will bypass the wedding night and just remember it in French.
My current reading matter is by Ken Follett: "Fall of Giants". The first book of the Century Trilogy, one of those generational sagas involving five families from different countries of Europe plus America, and commences with WWI.
I am enjoying it very much.
Re: Winter Reading, Anyone?
I am reading Mel's original Square Foot Gardening book. There is a lot of good information in the book especially for someone like me who does both old style SFG and All New SFG. So far I have completed the first 68 pages of this 316 page book.

Someday, I will have to read it, also. Right now I'm working on the second book by Chris Pavone, The Accident. We really liked The Expats. Complicated but riveting writing.

Just finished, "Teaming with Microbes"
Started "Gaia's Garden" .
Was fascinated with TWM but found myself skimming "Gaia's Garden". Just can't get into it.

Bringing Nature Home, by Douglas Bellamy—about the importance of planting native trees/plants etc. in your landscape to support the dependent web of life that we all depend on! Very interesting, especially what we think of as native, most really aren’t!

Interesting that on page 115 of his original SFG book Mel mentions a "mix of one-third coarse vermiculite, one-third peat moss and one-third compost". This is specifically in connection with container growing on a patio. This must be the "germ" for what would become Mel's Mix in the All New SFG method.trolleydriver wrote:I am reading Mel's original Square Foot Gardening book. I still have an old dusty, musty, and moldy copy that I purchased in 1992.
